Borderlands 4 Removes Minimap, Gearbox CEO Says to “Play the Game, Not Play the Map”

Gearbox Entertainment is introducing some intriguing alterations for Borderlands 4, such as a continuous game world without loading screens and the ability to equip weapons with traits from various manufacturers through Licensed Parts. Yet, it’s also somewhat going back to its origins by omitting the minimap, which was introduced starting from Borderlands 2.

In simpler terms, Randy Pitchford mentioned during PAX East (as reported by PC Gamer) that they had created an expansive world, and navigating through it can be challenging when you have multiple objectives or opportunities scattered far apart. He explained that a local map isn’t effective in this case, and a compass is more useful for helping us manage these objectives and opportunities effectively.

The original map remains accessible for use by players whenever needed. However, it’s worth noting that Gearbox is encouraging players to engage more with the game itself rather than just the map. To facilitate this, they have prioritized a new compass system and dedicated significant resources to its development. Rest assured, you can still access the larger map with just one click if needed.

Additionally, we’ve packed this with more innovative features than any previous design. In fact, it includes a cutting-edge, AI-powered navigation system, much like having a built-in GPS on a large scale map, guiding you on your journey.

As a dedicated fan, I’m eagerly anticipating the possibilities that lie ahead for this game. However, Cliff Bleszinski, the mastermind behind its creation, encourages us to immerse ourselves fully first. He suggests experiencing the game itself, comprehending the decisions made by the team, and then it will become clear how vast this world is, and why exploring it through gameplay surpasses the traditional map-based approach.

The anticipated game Borderlands 4 will release on September 13th, available for play on Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. As of now, the price has not been disclosed; however, Gearbox Software’s Randy Pitchford hinted it might retail at around $80.

Keep an eye out for upcoming news, and during this time, feel free to explore some exciting demonstrations of story mission gameplay showcasing movement, battles, and fresh Vault Hunter abilities. Gearbox Software has also revealed that you’ll have the option to replay story missions and boss encounters. For further information, click here.
