Borderlands 4 Teaser Doesn't Feature Handsome Jack: "It's Much Worse"

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the announcement of Borderlands 4 has sent waves of excitement coursing through our gaming community. The teaser might not have given us much to go on, but it’s enough to spark the detective instincts in all of us, myself included!

For many viewers of the Gamescom Opening Night Live event on August 20th, a standout moment was the formal announcement of Borderlands 4, which developers have been subtly suggesting for quite some time now, and even more so recently following the disappointing reception to the premiere of the Borderlands movie adaptation. The teaser trailer unveiled for Gearbox’s Borderlands 4 doesn’t disclose many details about the upcoming game, but it provides enough tantalizing glimpses for dedicated Borderlands fans who eagerly scrutinize every detail in hopes of gleaning clues about what the next installment in the series might offer.

Indeed, the creators themselves are jumping into the mystery-solving excitement, with Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford posting the teaser on his personal social media platforms, hinting that “There are several secrets hidden within this teaser for Borderlands 4. Some I haven’t seen discussed yet. What have you discovered?” Apart from numerous fans excitedly pointing out Lillith’s possible return, the teaser also included a fleeting shot that many suspect signals the comeback of the series’ notorious villain – Handsome Jack.

After Pitchford addressed several of these claims today, it turns out that the individual thought to be Jack is actually someone else – a revelation that could be seen as positive or negative depending on personal feelings towards him. However, what’s important is that this development indicates Gearbox isn’t clinging to the past and continues to push the series into the future.

Regarding the identity of the mystery character if not Handsome Jack, fans of Borderlands might have a long wait ahead for a conclusive reveal. However, a recent remark from Pitchford today sheds some light on the situation that undoubtedly raises more intriguing questions: “It’s not Jack. It’s far worse.”

It’s quite surprising, indeed, to learn that Gearbox is hinting at a character who might surpass Handsome Jack, a highly acclaimed antagonist in the gaming world and a beloved figure in the franchise. After all, Jack has an impressive collection of questionable deeds under his belt: from mass killings, cruel animal experiments, the destruction of New Haven, acts of torture, issuing assassination orders, kidnapping and imprisoning numerous individuals, including his own daughter, and spreading tyranny across Pandora. This guy certainly has a lot to hide!

I’m excited to see what Gearbox has in store for whomever this mystery figure is.
