Borderlands 4 Will Feature “The Biggest Universe That We’ve Built” – Gearbox CEO

As a die-hard fan, I’m thrilled to share some exciting news about Borderlands 4 straight from the horse’s mouth – Randy Pitchford, CEO of Gearbox! During a panel at PAX East, he unveiled that our upcoming co-op looter shooter will be more open than its predecessors. He described the new setting, Kairos, as “the largest universe we’ve ever built.” And get this – it’s seamless with no load times! So buckle up, Vault Hunters, because the adventure is about to be even bigger and smoother!

During the discussion, Pitchford mentioned that Borderlands 4 would offer an all-encompassing experience for players. He explained that what appears on the screen isn’t just decorative background but can actually be explored and traveled to. “If you see something anywhere on the screen, whether it’s a distance away or in the sky, you will have the ability to reach it,” he stated.

As an ardent fan, I’ve picked up on some intriguing tidbits from Gearbox Software’s Randy Pitchford regarding the upcoming Borderlands 4. In contrast to previous games, this installment will not incorporate a minimap to aid navigation. Instead, Pitchford emphasized that a minimap might not be the ideal tool for navigating an expansive game world such as the one we can expect in Borderlands 4.

Pitchford stated that many of your actions can be considered ‘local,’ but there are also numerous things you aspire to achieve or desire, which lie beyond your immediate surroundings. A map of the local area isn’t effective when considering multiple objectives and possibilities, some of which may be quite distant. A compass, however, can aid us in navigating towards those goals more effectively.

In his remarks, it was pointed out that the choice was also taken as part of Gearbox’s fresh design philosophy. This approach aims to encourage players to focus more on the game itself instead of merely the mini-map. However, it’s important to note that players will continue to have the option to consult a map, which can be accessed through one of the in-game menus. As Pitchford explained, “We made this decision, and we focused our resources on enhancing the compass system. But rest assured, the main map is just a click away.

Furthermore, we’ve packed this space with innovative features unlike any other, including an advanced AI-guided navigation system. This system serves as your personal GPS, outlining the optimal path for your exploration on a large digital map.

On social platforms, Pitchford has also verified that the studio is aiming for a frame rate of 60 frames per second (FPS) on gaming consoles. Although specifics about the console resolutions the game will utilize are still undisclosed, it’s reasonable to assume that this 60 FPS target at least pertains to the performance mode in Borderlands 4.

In his own words, Pitchford doesn’t fret much about game balance, instead preferring to create overpowered builds with exceptional loot and obliterate bosses. He encourages players to become legends. However, it’s worth noting that the balance of the game will be managed by creative director Greame Timmins. As for potential adjustments, Pitchford mentioned that the studio would step in when unforeseen occurrences, such as game-breaking loot drops, arise.

The anticipated game titled “Borderlands 4” is set to launch on September 13th, and it’s expected to be available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and the yet-to-be-released Nintendo Switch 2.
