It appears that escalating prices are persistently affecting the gaming industry, with software costs being one of the items experiencing steady increases. Notably, Nintendo declared that the launch price for Mario Kart World on the Nintendo Switch 2 would be $80. Subsequently, Microsoft announced its intention to match this pricing strategy for its first-party releases in the future. This raises the question of whether other companies in the industry will also adopt similar pricing strategies.
Regarding Borderlands 4, its final cost could be around $80 according to Randy Pitchford, CEO of Gearbox Entertainment. However, more details are yet to emerge.
At the PAX East panel (through GamesRadar), Pitchford shared that he’s still undecided about the cost of Borderlands 4, as the decision hasn’t been finalized yet within their team. However, considering that Borderlands 4 was developed with a budget over double that of Borderlands 3, there might be a correlation between the increased production costs and the game’s potential price tag.
Pitchford admitted honestly, “I’m not aware of the answer.” Later on, he stated truthfully, “I’ll give it to you straight.” He further explained, “We’re in a fascinating phase right now. On one hand, we have a competitive market where sellers aim to sell as many items as they can while being cautious about cost-conscious buyers. Some individuals even dislike the idea of price increases, including those who set the prices themselves.
It’s recognized that game production costs are on the rise, and there are additional costs associated with retail packaging. The situation is becoming quite challenging, indeed. In fact, the development budget for Borderlands 4 is over double that of Borderlands 3, meaning we’re unsure about the price point at this time.
In further discussion, Pitchford mentioned that the price of Borderlands 4 could potentially match the initial prices set by Nintendo and Microsoft. However, he also suggested the possibility that they might delay its release. With pre-orders of the game expected to go live shortly, we should find out the definite answer soon.
Borderlands 4 launches on September 12 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
