Borderlands Creator Teases Next Game in the Series Following Film's Flop

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must admit that the recent Borderlands movie left me feeling a tad underwhelmed and disappointed, much like an unopened loot chest filled with common junk instead of legendary gear. However, I’ve learned to never lose hope in the gaming world, especially when it comes to the Borderlands franchise.

Last week saw the debut of the Borderlands film to generally negative reviews from critics, and it seems that the movie is currently underperforming commercially as well. This certainly isn’t the outcome that fans of the game series had anticipated, but there may be some optimism for the future. At present, Gearbox Software is working on a new video game in the franchise, though details about the project are scarce at the moment. In a recent tweet, Randy Pitchford, the creator of Borderlands, attempted to maintain a positive outlook regarding the difficulties faced by the film adaptation, while simultaneously generating excitement for Borderlands 4.

In simpler terms, Pitchford is expressing that they are thrilled to hear their Borderlands games are appreciated more than some renowned filmmakers’ works. They’re putting in even more effort for the upcoming projects.

Earlier this year, it was confirmed that there will be a fourth game in the Borderlands series, as Gearbox Software, the developers behind the games, were acquired by Take-Two Interactive. Previously, Gearbox had been owned by Embracer Group, but after an acquisition in 2021, they started a restructuring process that included closing or selling off several recently purchased studios. For months, it was suggested that Embracer might sell Gearbox as part of this initiative, and the sale was officially announced in March. Since Take-Two had previously published the Borderlands games under their 2K Games label, it seemed natural for the two companies to reunite.

In 2019, the latest main installment of the Borderlands series, titled “Borderlands 3,” was launched. Following this, in 2022, two spin-off games were introduced: “Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands” and “New Tales from the Borderlands.” As for the development of Borderlands 4, we are currently unaware of its progress. It’s hoped that developer Gearbox will share more details soon. Although a new game in the series won’t impact opinions about the Borderlands movie, at least it could provide fans with something to divert their attention from it!
