Borderlands ending explained: Who is the daughter of Eridia?

As a seasoned moviegoer with over three decades of watching films under my belt, I must confess that Borderlands left me feeling more like a battle-scarred Vault Hunter than entertained. After the recent successes of video game adaptations such as The Last of Us and Fallout, I was hopeful that Eli Roth’s offering would break the mold, but alas, it seems we must continue to wait for that cinematic redemption.

**WARNING: Contains major spoilers for Borderlands**

As a cinephile who’s followed the evolution of video game adaptations, I must say it feels like we’ve turned a corner, thanks to critically-adored series like The Last of Us and Fallout paving the way. It seems that the stigma surrounding these adaptations is gradually fading away.

Regrettably, I haven’t had the pleasure of seeing Borderlands on the big screen just yet, as it seems that this latest film has followed in the footsteps of recent disappointments such as Uncharted, Mortal Kombat, and Five Nights at Freddy’s. Yet again, a cherished video game franchise appears to have fallen short when attempting to captivate audiences on the silver screen.

To put it simply, Eli Roth’s movie, with its big-name cast, has received extremely negative reviews and holds a mere 4% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This low score may not encourage many moviegoers who are hesitant about whether they should go see it.

If you’re among those undeterred by the mixed reviews and seeking clarification about the closing acts, here’s a breakdown of the Borderlands ending. But remember, from now on, significant plot points may be revealed, so consider yourself warned: spoilers ahead.

Borderlands ending explained: Who is the daughter of Eridia?

Initially, let’s go over what transpired before the climactic scene. The story begins with the rogue character Lilith, played by Cate Blanchett, being employed by the threatening figure Atlas (Edgar Ramirez). His mission is to locate his daughter Tiny Tina (Ariana Greenblatt), an assignment that triggers a tumultuous adventure. This adventure results in the creation of a motley crew, who band together with the goal of bringing down Atlas.

The team, which includes Lilith, Tina, transformed mercenary Roland (Kevin Hart), musclebound protector Krieg (Florian Munteanu), peculiar scientist Tannis (Jamie Lee Curtis) and annoying robot Claptrap (Jack Black), is tasked with surmounting various challenges to reach a secret Vault. This vault can only be unlocked by the ‘Daughter of Eridia’.

Initially, everyone believed Tiny Tina to be their crucial daughter, but when she tried to open the Vault, it didn’t work – disproving that assumption.

Unfortunately, Atlas and his team appear, exposing the fact that she was synthesized with Eridium blood solely to provide him access to the Vault. Since this strategy has failed, she is now redundant in his eyes – thus, she must perish.

Fortunately, Lilith, having just returned with a hidden message from her deceased mother, steps in at the right moment to resolve the situation.

As it transpires, Lilith is actually the child of Eridia, and this revelation allows her to claim her position to unlock the Vault. The moment she does so, it bursts open. Furthermore, she seems to ignite just before unfurling a spectacular set of fiery wings.

It turns out, consistent with what game players might anticipate, she’s unveiled as both the child of Eridia and the deity recognized as the Firehawk. This divine figure, known as the Firehawk, is tasked with safeguarding the realm of Pandora.

Initially, her responsibility lies in rescuing Tina, trapped within the Vault, and destroying Atlas’s spaceship – a duty she manages effortlessly. Truly, what marvels one can achieve when one possesses flames as wings!

However, things aren’t as straightforward as they seem. Atlas has a mysterious protective shield around him, allowing him to capture Tina. He then forcefully insists that Lilith leads them all to the Vault, where he can access its formidable weapons, once wielded by the rulers of the galaxy.

In the depths of The Vault, Atlas struggles against Lilith, but she proves superior. She outsmarts his defenses, leaving him imprisoned, while she makes off with Tina. Then, we transition to scenes of jubilation, featuring a spectacular fireworks show and dazzling feats by Lilith as she demonstrates her newly acquired pyrotechnic abilities.

What remains is just a short mid-credit sequence where Claptrap exhibits his dancing skills, and voila! Pandora has been rescued!

Borderlands is now showing in UK cinemas.
