As a long-time fan of the Borderlands franchise, I’ve been through the highs and lows, the laughs and the grinds, the Vault Hunters and the bandits. So, when I heard about the upcoming Borderlands movie, I was filled with a mix of excitement and trepidation – much like my feelings during those epic boss fights!
Reviews for the “Borderlands” movie are now rolling out, and after taking several into account, its Rotten Tomatoes score leaves much to be desired. Currently, the “Borderlands” film has a 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on over 20 reviews, a consensus that is quite negative from people who mostly have nothing but unfavorable things to say about this video game adaptation. If it maintains this score or even improves slightly, the response to the “Borderlands” movie thus far will make it challenging for future video game adaptations to break free from the so-called ‘gaming adaptation curse’, a notion that more recent adaptations have attempted to disprove.
Initially, more than 20 reviews for the movie “Borderlands” were available on Rotten Tomatoes. However, as of publication, only about 14 reviews remain, indicating some have been taken down. Despite this change in the number of reviews, the movie still holds a consistent score: a 0%, regardless of who is being considered.
As a die-hard fan, I’ve noticed that some critics have offered harsh critiques about the movie’s flaws, pointing out that it does indeed incorporate elements from the games, which fans should recognize. However, concerning reviews suggest that even ardent fans of the Borderlands series may not find joy in this adaptation. The humor in the Borderlands universe can be a contentious topic, with some finding it hilarious while others perceive it as incessant chatter and vulgarities. Unfortunately, it seems that the movie fails to capture any of the original’s wit or amusement, if the reviews are accurate.
Even prior to these reviews dropping, it would’ve been putting it lightly to say that Borderlands fans were skeptical of the film. It’s been in development for years which didn’t exactly inspire confidence in how it would turn out, and some of the casting decisions such as Kevin Hart playing Roland were ill-received. It was also pointed out that the apparent ages of the movie versions of the characters did not line up with the ages expected from the video game which again caused Borderlands fans to be hesitant despite big names like Cate Blanchett, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Jack Black attached.
On August 9th, the “Borderlands” movie will be available in cinemas nationwide, giving both die-hard fans and the mildly intrigued a chance to witness it firsthand.
