Borderlands Star Florian Munteanu Talks Acting in a Mask

As a seasoned gamer with decades of virtual warfare under my belt, I must admit that the borderlands between reality and fantasy have blurred for me over the years. The anticipation for the big screen adaptation of Borderlands has been palpable, despite the less-than-stellar reviews from critics.

Tonight, “Borderlands” makes its theater premiere, despite receiving a surprisingly low rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, enthusiasts are still eager to watch how director Eli Roth transformed the cherished video game into a film. The cast includes Cate Blanchett (as Lilith), Jamie Lee Curtis (Patricia Tannis), Kevin Hart (Roland), Ariana Greenblatt (Tiny Tina), Jack Black (Claptrap), and Florian Munteanu (Krieg). In a conversation with ComicBook, Munteanu, who is also recognized for his role as Razor Fist in “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” discussed whether portraying his character in “Borderlands” was more difficult or liberating due to the physical demands of the role, since he spends most of the movie masked and growling.

As a sports enthusiast who’s no stranger to taking on physical roles, I found myself well-prepared for this part due to my lifelong involvement in sports. However, the unique aspects of this character, such as his speech, movements, and unusual grunts, presented a fresh challenge that felt almost surreal.

He wondered back then, “How can I handle that madness?” But once he discovered the perfect places to express himself, and learned how to trigger the character’s reactions appropriately, he effortlessly slipped into the role. It turned out to be a lot more enjoyable than anticipated. In fact, his thoughts were barely conscious of it. Thus, there was also a sense of liberation at some point.

Additionally, we inquired about any unrecognized champions behind the scene, and Munteanu enthusiastically acknowledged his makeup artist.

Munteanu stated, “Indeed, it was Jana who did my makeup. You should know, I would spend about two to three hours daily in the makeup chair because we needed to apply all those scars. After fighting and sweating, the scars and prosthetics would become less noticeable.”

He typically spends between two and three hours in the morning, and an additional hour later on for preparation, which includes applying makeup to cover scars and other details before he’s ready to leave. Jana also helped with the mask. So, a big thank you to Jana for her excellent work. And at the end of the day, she managed to make me appear just as I did in the movie.
