Bowen Yang Calls Saturday Night Live "Cringiest Thing in Show Business"

As a long-time fan and now a fortunate member of the Saturday Night Live (SNL) family, I can’t help but feel a love-hate relationship with this iconic sketch comedy show. On one hand, it has given me countless hours of laughter and entertainment throughout my life, and on the other, it brings me face to face with the cringiest moments in show business.

As a gamer, I’d rephrase it like this: “Performing on Saturday Night Live is both a blessing and a curse for me, Bowen Yang. I’m grateful that this live sketch comedy platform has given me a career many comedians only dream of, but the truth is, it can be pretty awkward up there.”

“I’ve dealt with awkward situations before, climbing the proverbial ‘cringe mountain.’ And where better to find that than at Saturday Night Live, known for its cringeworthy moments in every aspect? As I shared on my podcast recently.”

Yang made it clear that fans’ responses to the “SNL” series are usually what make him feel that the program is the most awkward experience in show business for him.

“Being eternally thankful for the opportunity to work there, it will significantly shape my life and career, but it can be an uncomfortable experience due to constant criticism about SNL, such as people saying it’s not good, not as great as it once was. This kind of feedback might have a psychological impact on you, causing you to develop a ‘I don’t care’ attitude.”
