Brad Pitt Reuniting With David Ayer On Suicide Squad Director’s Next Movie

Brad Pitt will team up once more with his director from “Fury,” David Ayer, as he has been chosen for the lead role in the movie titled “Heart of the Beast.” According to Deadline, this action-adventure film tells the story of an ex-Special Forces soldier (the character Pitt will portray) who, together with his former military dog, must struggle for survival following a plane crash in the harsh Alaskan wilderness. Besides Ayer, Pitt will also collaborate with Damien Chazelle, who directed him in the 2022 film “Babylon,” as one of the producers on “Heart of the Beast.” Apart from acting, Pitt will also take on a producing role for this project.

The Deadline report does not specify when the “Heart of the Beast” project will commence filming, but given that Brad Pitt has been cast, it appears that this production is a top priority for director David Ayer and Paramount Pictures. They are likely planning to begin shooting very soon.

Last March, Ayer agreed to direct “Heart of the Beast.” This filmmaker is fresh from 2024’s “The Beekeeper,” a Jason Statham blockbuster that garnered good critiques and raked in $152.7 million at global box offices. As he works on upcoming projects, Ayer remains optimistic that his take on the 2016 “Suicide Squad” will eventually be released.

As a cinephile, I vividly remember watching “Fury” back in 2014 – a collaborative effort between Brad Pitt and David Ayer that left a lasting impression. This World War II drama centered around a tank crew undertaking a perilous mission resonated with audiences, earning the recognition of the National Board of Review as one of the year’s top films. Pitt’s gripping performance even garnered him a Best Actor in an Action Movie nomination at the Critics Choice Awards. From a commercial standpoint, “Fury” proved to be a box office triumph, raking in a staggering $211.8 million worldwide, against a production budget that fell within the $68-80 million range.

David Ayer’s directing skills can sometimes be unpredictable (his film “Fury” was released in the same year as the critically disliked “Sabotage”), but the possibility of him collaborating again with Brad Pitt is intriguing. Given their successful partnership on “Fury”, it will be fascinating to see what they develop for the upcoming movie, “Heart of the Beast”. From its synopsis, it appears this could be a powerful drama, with the relationship between the former soldier and his canine friend serving as the film’s emotional heart. If David Ayer’s best works (like “Fury” and “End of Watch”) are any indication, this movie could excel at delving deeply into its characters, and “Heart of the Beast” seems to be a fitting candidate for that. Brad Pitt’s natural acting prowess is likely to be one of the film’s key strengths, making his ex-soldier character someone easy to cheer for and empathize with.
