Brainwashed

Ruby Franke‘s son Chad Franke is defending himself.

In my own words, as the eldest among Ruby’s six children from my former partner Kevin Franke, I have refuted accusations of being “brainwashed” by a contentious parenting influencer, assuring that my love for my mom, who is currently serving time in prison on child abuse charges, remains unchanged.

On Instagram Stories, Chad posted on March 3, he wrote: “To those claiming my dad and I are still under the influence due to loving another person, here’s a response – ‘Try scooping Walter’s litter.’

The realtor based in Utah seemed to allude to Jodi Hildebrandt, Ruby’s business partner who is currently incarcerated, by sharing a photo of Wario, Mario’s archrival from the Nintendo game series. Alongside it, they wrote, “My healing process was discovering that this character was my unintended therapist.

His posts followed closely after the February 27th debut of “Devil in the Family: The Fall of Ruby Franke,” a docuseries that includes interviews with Chad, his father Kevin, and his 21-year-old sibling Shari Franke.

In one episode, Kevin expressed, “Though her actions were abhorrent, there’s a yearning within me.” He continued, “It seems simple for the world to despise Ruby, and many expect me to echo their sentiments. However, I can’t suppress all those other memories we shared.

Chad shared the same viewpoint, but he and Kevin contended that Jodi, a previous family therapist who’s currently imprisoned on child abuse allegations, may have influenced Ruby’s decision, causing her to evict the father-son pair from the house before her 2023 detention.

In a recent post on Snapchat, Chad expressed that not many people understand just how skillful Jodi was at manipulating situations. He hopes that everyone comes to this realization while watching the docu-series.

Additionally, it’s not just Chad who has expressed his thoughts during Ruby’s imprisonment; Shari, too, has shared her experiences in the book titled “Devil in the Family“. In this work, she reveals that she and her siblings were frequently referred to as “employees” while Ruby took on the role of the “CEO”.

In her account of residing with the YouTube parenting expert, she conveyed that it seemed less like a home and more like a stage or film set.

Chad expressed on Snapchat that many people might not grasp just how skillful Jodi was in deceiving others, and he hopes they eventually understand this.

Additionally, it’s not just Chad who has voiced opinions about Ruby during her imprisonment; in the book titled “Devil in the Family“, Shari discussed how they and their siblings were frequently labeled as “employees”, with Ruby holding the position of the “CEO”.

In her account of life at the YouTuber’s home, it seemed more like a stage set rather than an ordinary residence.

Ruby and Jodi, both convicted of four counts of second-degree aggravated child abuse, have remained silent about the documentary series. But following her prison sentence in 2024, Ruby tearfully expressed regret for her “warped perspective on reality” that was allowed to continue unchallenged as she isolated herself from those who questioned it.

To my dearest children, you hold a piece of my heart within yours. In a talk to you, I confessed that I once saw darkness as light and wrong as right, but now I see the truth. There is nothing in this world I wouldn’t do for your sake. Unintentionally, I took away from you everything tender, secure, and virtuous.

In a recent statement, authorities in Utah disclosed they had responded to a report of a child found in a weakened state. Upon examination, this child was described as being extremely thin, malnourished and bearing open wounds, with signs of duct tape around the limbs. The child was immediately rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

It was revealed later that he was the 12-year-old son of YouTuber Ruby Franke, as reported by NBC News from a probable cause affidavit. The boy had been at the residence of Ruby’s business partner, Jodi Hildebrant, and managed to escape through a window. Subsequently, he sought help at a neighbor’s house, according to the document.

Subsequently, they inspected a neighboring residence, where another child was discovered in a comparable state of malnutrition and required hospitalization, as stated in the press statement.

Officials later revealed that they found Ruby’s nine-year-old child, who was terrified, seated alone inside a vacant wardrobe in Jodi’s residence, according to proof made public by the Washington County Attorney’s Office.

In Utah, Ruby was detained for severe child abuse allegations, with Jodi also being involved. Notably, in 2007, Jodi founded ConneXions, a life coaching service that some former clients told NBC News was reminiscent of a cult, rooted in teachings similar to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

On August 31st, as per TopMob’s report, Shari Franke, Ruby’s grown-up daughter, expressed her thoughts about the recent news through her Instagram Story.

Shari, born in 2003, expressed her joy that justice is being served. She and her family have long tried to bring their concerns to the police and Child Protection Services, and they’re relieved that action has finally been taken. The children are now safe, but there’s a lot of work left to be done on the road ahead.

Apart from Ruby, her siblings Ellie Mecham, Bonnie Hoellein, and Julie Deru also voiced their opinions, stating that the arrest of the YouTuber was necessary.

Over the past three years, they chose not to discuss Ruby Franke out of concern for her children’s wellbeing. Privately, they have taken necessary steps to ensure their safety. They felt it was inappropriate to continue with regular content without first addressing the recent developments. After doing so, they will refrain from commenting on the matter any further.

The siblings said Ruby’s kids are “now safe, which is the number one priority.”

Earlier, the YouTube personality known as the 8 Passengers and her business associate, Jodi, were both officially accused of six counts of serious child abuse by the Prosecutor of Washington County in Utah.

Ruby’s spouse, Kevin Franke, publicly declared his innocence regarding the accusations against her. Randy Kester, their legal representative, shared with Good Morning America that the couple had been separated for a period of 13 months prior to her arrest.

The attorney stated, “He’s a kind soul, extremely compassionate. Not once have there been accusations of him harming the children or anyone else physically.

A court document shows that NBC News has confirmed Kevin’s petition for divorce from the Utah-based influencer.

On December 18th, TopMob verified that Ruby admitted guilt for four of the charges against her. According to the Associated Press, at that moment, she expressed her deepest remorse and sadness for her family and children by pleading guilty.

Jodi would also plead guilty to four counts of second-degree felony aggravated child abuse.

The two females received a total of four back-to-back prison terms ranging from one to fifteen years each. However, their maximum sentence is limited to thirty years according to Utah’s laws.

The parent vlogger apologized during her sentencing to her six kids and estranged husband.

For the last four years, I’ve been guided by advice that steered me into a deep-seated illusion, she admitted in court. My skewed perception of truth was seldom questioned because I avoided interactions with those who disagreed with me.

She went on to say, “To my dears, you are an extension of myself. In my perspective, darkness became light and what was once right felt wrong. I would go to any lengths for your sake. I stripped you of everything tender, secure, and pure.

Authorities made public her alarming diary excerpts, detailing abusive actions towards her kids, such as her teenage son whom she described as being involved in Satanism.

In a journal entry from July 10, 2023 (her son’s 12th birthday), she wrote: “He moves stealthily and secretly searching for chances when others aren’t looking, then he quickly disappears. If he aims to imitate the savior, he must be completely devoted, without a hint of deviation or concealment.

She wrote about punishing her children by beating them and withholding food and water.

Investigators’ conversation with Kevin following Ruby’s arrest was made public by the prosecution, containing statements where he discussed perceived limitations within their household regarding an alleged incident.

In an audio recording shared by TopMob, Kevin expressed that multiple restrictions had been imposed on him. For instance, he could leave whenever he wished but was not allowed to return unless given permission by Ruby. He also couldn’t enter the kitchen to eat without her approval and the upstairs area where Jodi resided was off-limits. Essentially, he felt like he no longer had access to certain parts of his own home. Furthermore, Ruby decided the conditions under which they would communicate, making their interactions subject to her rules. This arrangement proved challenging for him.
