After four weeks in cinemas, it’s confirmed that “Captain America: Brave New World” won’t be the smallest earner in the Captain America series. This weekend, it’s projected to make approximately $8.7 million domestically, bringing its U.S. total to around $177 million. “Captain America: The First Avenger,” which came out in 2011, concluded its domestic run with a gross of $176.6 million. Even if “Brave New World” doesn’t surpass “The First Avenger” this weekend (as these figures are estimates that may change), it’s almost certain that it will make more by the end of its run.
For three straight weekends, “Captain America: Brave New World” held the number one position at the box office. However, this weekend it dropped to second place. Taking the top spot is director Bong Joon-ho’s movie, “Mickey 17”. This sci-fi film featuring Robert Pattinson is projected to earn between $18-20 million in its domestic debut, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
Kicking off during Presidents’ Day weekend, the new release of “Captain America: Brave New World” managed a decent, albeit not overwhelming, opening of $100 million across the extended holiday period. Regrettably for Marvel and Disney, the movie didn’t show much staying power. In its second weekend, “Brave New World” experienced one of the sharpest drops in MCU history, plummeting by 68%. Only the notoriously underperforming Marvel films “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and “The Marvels” have seen larger declines during their second weekends.
The film titled “Captain America: Brave New World” faced a variety of criticisms and garnered mixed responses, with some critics finding its narrative lacking. This film’s Rotten Tomatoes score from professional critics is significantly lower than that of any other Captain America film, indicating that it didn’t spark widespread excitement among audiences. Furthermore, “Brave New World” made negative headlines following revelations about the film’s difficult production process.
With an estimated production budget of approximately $180 million, Brave New World might steer clear of the financial struggles faced by Quantumania and The Marvels. Given its more modest cost compared to other recent Marvel productions, it stands a better chance at making a profit. However, this won’t provide much comfort for Disney and Marvel as The First Avenger was released during the early days of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), a time before the franchise reached its current cultural dominance. The fact that it has taken so long for Brave New World to surpass the box office earnings of The First Avenger is not encouraging, especially as Marvel approaches the culmination of the Multiverse Saga. Any expectations of Brave New World reaching the domestic grosses achieved by The Winter Soldier ($259.7 million) or Civil War ($408 million) have been largely squashed.
It’s intriguing to consider whether the success of “Brave New World” will influence the trajectory of future Captain America sequels. Although no fifth Captain America film has been confirmed, it’s clear that Anthony Mackie’s character Sam Wilson will play a crucial role in the franchise, assuming leadership duties for the next version of the Avengers. Since many find Mackie’s performance in “Brave New World” to be exceptional, there might be room for him to star in another solo movie in the future. A well-crafted script could make Captain America 5 a successful box office contender, especially if Mackie delivers a stellar performance in “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Secret Wars”.
