Square Enix has shared initial details and images about the high-definition remaster of “Bravely Default: Flying Fairy“. This reveal encompasses the game’s narrative, characters, environment, novel additions, combat mechanics, and job roles.

As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled to share that the beloved RPG franchise, the Bravely series, which has sold over three million units globally – starting with the groundbreaking title, Bravely Default, and serving as the foundation for Octopath Traveler – is now making its way onto Nintendo Switch 2 in stunning high-definition!

■ Story
Make for the distant land of Luxendarc as a warrior of light.
Suddenly, out of nowhere, a monstrous fissure gaped open in my world, swallowing my entire village whole. I, Tiz, was the lone soul left standing. In the depths of my despair, I stumbled upon a young and radiant vestal named Agnes. With our shared goal of sealing the chasm and rescuing the crystals trapped in darkness, we embarked on an arduous journey together…
They set off, entirely unaware of the significance of that goal.

Tiz Arrior (voiced by Bryce Papenbrook in English)
A kind, young man hoping to rebuild his home.
Originating from the quaint hamlet of Norende, this shepherd witnessed a tragic event – the colossal rift known as The Great Chasm engulfed his beloved village and claimed the life of his dear younger brother right before him. Accompanied by Agnes, who shares his dream to seal the chasm, he shoulders the responsibility of restoring Norende, being its last living inhabitant.
Agnes Oblige (voiced by Erin Fitzgerald in English)
A vestal seeking to awaken the crystals.
A girl, who’s been tending to the Wind Crystal since her youth as a vestal, begins an adventure. Accompanied by a fairy called Airy, whom she encountered before the Great Chasm split apart, Agnes sets out on a mission to purify the world from shadows, reviving its four crystals in the process.
A young lady, voiced by Cassandra Lee Morris in English, who is on a personal quest for her own understanding and pursuit of justice.
Born as the sole child of the Duke of Eternia’s marshal, she was assigned by her duchy along with their Sky Knights to seize the wind vestal in Caldisla. However, growing disillusioned with her duchy’s deceitful tactics, she ultimately chose to side with Tiz and his companions instead.
Ringabel (voiced by Spike Spencer in English)
A man relying on a strange book to uncover his past.
A person suffering from amnesia, who appears to be young, arrives in Caldisla seeking his identity. The only possession he carries is a notebook labeled as D’s Journal, which for some reason records future events. Intrigued by this, he chooses to accompany Tiz’s group because their names are also mentioned in the journal.

Various locales dot the map of Luxendarc, the stage upon which the story is set.
A kingdom in the middle of a desert; a land of unceasing civil war; a nation of exclusively women…

Kingdom of Caldisla
The starting realm, where our quartet initially cross paths. Typically a peaceful nation, it’s currently facing numerous challenges, including the encroachment by the Eternian Sky Knights and the emergence of the Grand Crevasse.

■ System – HD Remaster
High-Definition Graphics
In this revised version, let’s say: High-definition character models and surroundings are now available, allowing you to fully appreciate the charming, illustrative graphics reminiscent of a children’s book that were distinctive in the original.

Redesigned User Interface for a Single Screen
As an avid gamer, I’m thrilled to share that the dual-screen layout initially crafted for the Nintendo 3DS is now revamped for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2! This update includes handy features like suggested character levels for dungeons and a “Heal All” button, making gameplay even more enjoyable.
Fast Forward
Not only does it boost the battle’s pace up to a maximum of four times, but you can also quickly move through event scenes by playing them twice as fast when autoplay is activated. Feel free to savor the narrative according to your preferences.
Encounter Rate Settings
As a gamer, I’d say: “I suggest we randomly bump into enemies about half the time when exploring, but this could vary from 50% to even 200%. The cool part is you can tweak this rate on the fly while navigating the map, making it easier or harder depending on your gaming style or the situation of our adventure.
Upgraded Online Compatibility for Modern Networks
In the Nintendo Switch 2, the networking aspects initially seen in the Nintendo 3DS have been revamped to offer free network connectivity. You can either team up with friends from your platform’s buddy list or embark on an adventure solo, based on your preference.
■ System
Two Varieties of Brand-New Minigames
Pause your exploration for a moment to dive into two freshly introduced mini-games. Participating in these games grants you numerous advantages, such as finding new entries in D’s Journal, which unveil hidden aspects of the narrative.
■ Battle
Ponder over each move carefully during turn-based combat encounters. You have a multitude of options: the decision on which command to use, the approach to fighting (style), and the number of actions to execute (tactics). This intricate and immersive battle system offers you a vast playground for strategic maneuvers.
■ Battle – Brave & Default
Brave & Default
In the game “Bravely Default,” mastering the key factors (Battle Points, BP) that dictate the quantity of your moves during combat is crucial. Two commands offer an exciting twist to battles: “Brave” allows you to spend BP, increasing the number of actions in a single turn, or “Default” to bolster your defenses and amass BP for future use.
Brave
Act up to four times in a single, aggressive turn.
Overwhelm the opponent with a barrage of offensive maneuvers or get out of tricky scenarios using a mix of revival and healing techniques. You could also make an early move on Battle Points you haven’t accumulated yet, but this will reduce your BP to below zero, making you unable to act until it refills—be cautious not to act recklessly with unwarranted courage.
Default
Harden your defenses and wait for your chance.
Accumulate BP as you minimize damage received from opponents. Using a turn to assess the opponent’s moves can be crucial when facing an unknown enemy or boss. Remember that your opponent can also default and brace for attack; if they default multiple times, it is wise to prepare a strategy to handle their subsequent attacks.
■ Battle – Jobs and Abilities
Jobs
On their adventure, Tiz and the group will encounter numerous formidable adversaries. Overcoming one of these adversaries could grant you an asterisk, a gem that bestows upon its holder a specific job. Each job offers unique combat styles and skills to master, so acquiring new jobs expands your tactical options in battle significantly.
—Progress through the story and battle new asterisk bearers.
—Triumph in battle to claim their asterisk and acquire a new job!
—Adapt the mix of roles and skills for your party to significantly boost their combat capabilities!
Abilities
As a gamer, I’ve discovered an exciting aspect of this game: leveling up my characters opens up access to two distinct types of skills – combat and support. The combat skills come in handy during battles, while the support ones simply require me to have them equipped for their effects to kick in. To strategize my character development, I always take a peek at the job menu to see which abilities each character will acquire down the line.
Command Abilities
Among over twenty available roles, characters can blend skills from any two jobs simultaneously. Experiment with the combinations that appeal to you, whether it’s crafting diverse offensive moves or creating a variety of supportive actions.
—Use the monk ability Invigorate to raise your attack power for two turns!
Support Abilities
Regardless of the character’s present roles, you can add support abilities that have already been unlocked to them. As you advance through the story, you’ll gain the ability to equip more at a time. It’s beneficial to reassess your setup periodically as you encounter increasingly powerful opponents.
—By wielding weapons with both hands using the Two-Handed knight skill, you can effectively boost their attack strength twice as much compared to when they’re held in a single hand.
Example Command Ability Combinations
—Black Mage + Freelancer
Discover the opponent’s vulnerabilities using the freelancer’s talents, and then eliminate them effectively with the appropriate elemental spells!
—Thief + White Mage
Regardless of how close your party is to perishing, utilize the thief’s exceptional agility to recover more swiftly than the adversary can strike!
—Knight + Monk
Cast off defense for a super offense!
Boost your knight’s two-handed attacks by 10% and arm them with a sword, significantly increasing their mastery over the weapon, making them an even more formidable swordsman!
Because you don’t carry a shield, your defense will be weaker, but with the Damage Dispersion skill activated, some of the damage inflicted upon you will be shared among your teammates.
Trust your allies to have your back while you pile on the aggression!
■ Jobs
Freelancer
Supporting the adventure with unique abilities.
Though their statistics might be commonplace, freelancers have the potential to acquire numerous useful skills, like assessing an opponent’s health and vulnerabilities or identifying the number of hidden treasures within a dungeon.
—Examine
See enemy HP, weakness, family, etc.
—Divining Rod
See number of chests in a dungeon.
Monk
Brute-force attackers.
Monks exhibit impressive health points (HP) and power in physical attributes, often outmatching their opponents using skills that inflict substantial damage. Because they’re capable of executing potent strikes without needing weapons, there’s no pressure to invest funds on arms for them.

Deal 2x damage with low accuracy.
—Hidden Dragon
Attack last to deal 25% more damage.
White Mage
Healers with their allies’ lives in their hands.
These spellcasters excel in the use of beneficial white magic, capable of healing Hit Points (HP) or enhancing the defenses of teammates. Although they might lack robust defense personally, including one in your group brings a great sense of tranquility and confidence.

Cure and other healing magic.

Protect and other support magic.
Black Mage
Attack magic experts.
These sorcerers harness dark energies to launch attacks involving diverse elements and weaken opponents. In fact, they possess the ability to annihilate entire enemy squads by exploiting vulnerabilities with appropriately chosen spells.

Poison and other enfeebling magic.
Knight
Well-rounded warriors excelling in both offense and defense.
Vigorous knights stand as protectors at the gathering. They’re capable of safeguarding their less formidable companions as well as dishing out punishment when required.

The Music Composed by Revo (from Sound Horizon / Linked Horizon) Revitalizes the Adventure Once More
Revo, a multi-talented artist, excels in songwriting, composing, and arranging. He is also the mastermind behind Sound Horizon, a group renowned for its innovative “Story Music” genre, which they showcased from their major-label debut in 2004. On March 5, 2025, Sound Horizon released their latest work titled “Halloween to Asa no Monogatari.” In 2012, Revo initiated Linked Horizon, a project aimed at fostering musical collaborations with various productions. This venture provided the opening theme for the 2013 anime series “Attack on Titan,” and performed in the Kohaku Uta Gassen that year as well.

Hello! This is Tomoya Asano, producer at Square Enix.
I’d like to start by talking about the motivation behind developing this game
Not too long ago, during the 10-year milestone of the Bravely Default series, a question crossed my mind: “How might we create something that would delight our loyal fanbase the most?
That was the starting point.
It’s been some time now since our 10-year milestone passed, yet I am extremely pleased that my hopes have managed to materialize as they did.
“A classic, orthodox style RPG typical of Square Enix with beautiful, slightly elaborate graphics.”
The path we chose subsequently influenced games like Octopath Traveler and other HD-2D titles in the future. Reflecting on the promotional materials from Japan during that period, the phrase “A new dynasty of RPGs” seems quite pompous, but it’s fitting that it feels like a lineage now, and that’s all thanks to our dedicated fans. A big thank you!
I hope we can continue this legacy into the future, but if you haven’t experienced the original game, I strongly suggest giving the remastered version of Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD a try. It was one of the games that started it all! If you played it a while ago, I think you’d be surprised by how much more beautiful and fresh it feels now. I would be thrilled if you could give it a chance too!
