As a dedicated cinephile with decades of film-watching under my belt, I must say the revelation that Werner Herzog was initially sought for the role of Peter Schuler in Breaking Bad has sent me into a frenzy of what-ifs! The prospect of hearing his distinctive voice and German accent as the head of Madrigal Electromotive would have added an extraordinary layer to the series’ already intricate narrative.
Screenwriter Thomas Schnauz recently disclosed an interesting tidbit about Breaking Bad: producers once considered Werner Herzog for the role of Peter Schuler, the head of Madrigal Electromotive, who was introduced in Season 5. This unexpected detail sparked excitement among fans and added another layer to the casual way it was shared online.
Over the weekend, Herzog made an appearance on CBS Sunday Morning for a detailed conversation about his personal life and professional journey, led by TCM host Ben Mankiewicz. Later, when Mankiewicz shared this interview on platform X, Schnauz commented that they had hoped to see Herzog in the role of Madrigal’s (Schuler) leader in Breaking Bad, but unfortunately, it didn’t work out. This comment sparked interest among many fans, with responses such as “That would have been incredible!” and “He would have been spot-on perfect!
In both Season 5, Episode 2 of “Breaking Bad” and Season 5, Episode 7 of “Better Call Saul,” titled “JMM,” the character Schuler was portrayed by Norbert Weisser. He held a significant position, being the head of the fast food division for a massive corporation that owned Los Pollos Hermanos, a restaurant chain operated by drug lord Gustavo Fring (Giancarlo Esposito). Notably, in the episode “Madrigal,” we encounter Schuler’s superior, Mr. Herzog, played by Wolf Muser. He is the CEO and president of Madrigal Eletromotive GmbH, suggesting that he was unaware his company had ties to organized crime.
In Breaking Bad, tension and suspense are consistently heightened by unveiling that Gus Fring’s seemingly legitimate businesses and money laundering schemes are far larger than anticipated. The Season 5 surprise, with his corporate backing from Germany, leaves viewers stunned. Consequently, the disintegration of this intricate network has repercussions felt all the way back in New Mexico. In Better Call Saul, Schuler’s involvement mirrors this pattern, adding depth to the complex web of deceit surrounding Gus’ operations.
Herzog is often cast for small parts where the dramatic effect of his voice and his German accent can be used to great effect. However, he is better known as a filmmaker in his own right. He is considered one of the pioneers of New German Cinema — a movement defined by budgetary constraints and creative frustrations in the 1960s and 70s. In recent years, Herzog’s prominent cameos include playing The Client in The Mandalorian Season 1, Keg Jeggins on Parks and Recreation and Shrimply Pibbles on Rick and Morty, among many others.
I’m thrilled to share that you can stream two fantastic shows, “Better Call Saul” and “Breaking Bad,” on Netflix right now! For fans of intriguing interviews, don’t miss out on an extended cut of Mankiewicz’s chat with Herzog, available on YouTube. And if you’re into news and current affairs, full episodes of “CBS Sunday Morning” are streaming on Paramount+ for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy the entertainment!
