As a film critic with a penchant for British mysteries and a soft spot for strong female leads, I must confess that Brenda Blethyn‘s portrayal of Vera Stanhope has been an absolute joy to follow over the past 14 years. While her Geordie accent may have been a challenge she never truly ‘cracked’, it only added to the authenticity and charm of the character.
Brenda’s ability to transform into Vera, navigating the intricate web of Northumberland’s murky mysteries while grappling with her personal demons, has been nothing short of captivating. The final episode, marking the end of this beloved series, provided a satisfying conclusion that tied up loose ends and allowed Vera to find peace with her past.
I found myself tearing up as Vera made peace with her father and decided to retire. It was bittersweet, like a well-aged cheese on a rainy day in Newcastle. I’ll miss the banter between Vera and her trusty sidekick Joe Ashworth (played by Paul Kaye), the stunning Northumbrian landscapes, and Brenda’s knack for making even the grittiest scenes seem somehow…cozy.
In true Vera fashion, I can’t help but end this review with a bit of humor: If you thought saying goodbye to Vera would be easy, think again! It’s like trying to forget the taste of a perfectly cooked haddock and chips after finishing a box at your local chippy. Trust me, it ain’t happening anytime soon! So, grab some fish and chips, settle in, and bid farewell to Vera, Pet on ITVX – you won’t regret it!
Brenda Blethyn spent 14 years as Vera Stanhope on the ITV series set in Newcastle.
As much as I anticipated that playing the renowned detective would feel like old hat for Blethyn by the series’ end, there was one aspect of her character that consistently posed a challenge to me – mastering the Geordie accent.
In an ITV documentary detailing the filming of the series, Blethyn shared insights into the method she used to develop Vera’s distinctive accent. A single individual on set played a crucial role in helping her master that challenging vocal performance.
On their very first day together on set, Geoff Blackburn, the props assistant, shared that he was recognized by someone as having “the voice I’ve been looking for!” This indicates the person immediately found his voice appealing.
“And that’s how she picked this voice up,” he explained.
As Blackburn was speaking, Blethyn, a native of Kent, couldn’t help but smile, as he quickly identified the familiarity in his speech.
Ah, Geoff,” she recalled. “In times of difficulty, I’d reach out to him, asking, ‘Geoff, what’s the right way to phrase this?’
“But I don’t think, actually, I have ever cracked it!”
We disagree!
On Thursday, 2nd January, Vera concluded successfully following a 14-year run on ITV. In her final assignment, the detective was tasked with resolving one more mystery from Ann Cleeves’ book “The Dark Wives.
In the course of probing a violent homicide, it’s discovered that a young woman connected to the case has vanished. This discovery sparks Vera to revisit memories from her own childhood, as she discerns a link to this missing girl.
After long years, she ultimately reconciles with her past and her intricate bond with her father, and concludes that now is the perfect moment for retirement.
Vera, Farewell Pet and all seasons of Vera are now available to view on ITVX.
