Brenda Blethyn on the end of Vera: “I thought, what if I’ve made a mistake?”

As a seasoned actress with a career spanning over five decades, Brenda Blethyn has undeniably left an indelible mark on the world of entertainment. Her journey from humble beginnings in Ramsgate to gracing the silver screen alongside Hollywood legends is nothing short of inspiring.

Brenda Blethyn is strolling with her canine companion, Jack, who happens to be a nine-year-old cockapoo with large, brown eyes. Meanwhile, Blethyn, at 78 years old and boasting two Oscar nominations, is a national treasure – but it’s evident that Jack rules the roost during their walks together.

Jack enters the interview room accompanied by his owner, with Blethyn settling onto the couch. Instantly, Jack hops beside her and leans his snout against her thigh, keeping a vigilant eye on me.

Blethyn apparently purchased a dog named Jack for her husband, Michael Mayhew, whom she met at the National Theatre in the mid-1970s and married in 2010. She felt guilty about spending extended periods every year filming Vera in the north east of England and believed that Jack could provide companionship to Mayhew at their homes in south London and Ramsgate, Kent.

Meanwhile, during the production of the 14th and concluding season of Vera last spring (consisting of two full-length episodes), Jack was present, spending time at the film set’s headquarters with a youthful caretaker assigned to attend to him.

In most scenes, Blethyn portrays the grumbly yet captivating DCI Vera Stanhope, and at lunchtime, Jack warmly welcomes her back. Sometimes, she’d take a break to solve a puzzle, a pastime that harks back to her childhood when her father would challenge Brenda and her seven siblings with puzzles. The dog and the puzzles served as distractions from the looming reality of Vera putting away her iconic green bucket hat for good.

Despite knowing Vera’s vast international following, Blethyn was still taken aback by the wave of disappointment when she revealed her decision to depart after 56 episodes. She explained, “I guess it’s partly due to the fact that it’s a show for families. There’s no unnecessary violence against women or exploitation. It’s not sensational. The themes are always thought-provoking – in the second of the two new episodes, there’s a story about private children’s homes, and it’s quite disturbing.

Leaving a successful series after 14 years was undoubtedly a tough choice for Blethyn, but she felt the need to spend more time with her husband and their shared life. Age, after all, catches up with everyone, and she prefers to stay at home rather than travel. Yet, this doesn’t mean she’s retiring; in fact, she agreed to work on a film with Andrea Riseborough shortly after completing Vera.

Was she able to complete filming the last scenes without becoming emotional, given that she felt a sense of finality and had a hard time holding back tears, her throat tightening with emotion, and worrying about potential errors?

Blethyn confesses she’ll be sad to let go of her character, remarking that “perhaps some of Brenda has seeped into Vera; we both have a compassionate nature and strive to do what is right.” However, she remains humble about her detective, acknowledging that she doesn’t place herself among the illustrious ranks of notable fictional female detectives like DCI Jane Tennison (portrayed by Helen Mirren in Prime Suspect) or Catherine Cawood (played by Sarah Lancashire in Happy Valley).

Hey Jack, hold your ground for a moment. Apologies, dear one. Let me recall… Ah yes, we were discussing Vera. You know what’s remarkable about her? She doesn’t require a romantic relationship to thrive. Well done! I haven’t seen it myself, but from what I gather, Ellis shares the same independence.

Indeed, I’m thrilled to express my admiration for Sharon D Clarke, who brilliantly portrays Ellis’s lead detective. As a trailblazer, she became the first black female actor in a leading TV detective role in Britain. The show’s initial season has garnered impressive ratings! I truly hope that her groundbreaking performance paves the way for more diverse representation, such as Parminder Nagra’s character DI Ray.

Her favourite TV show of recent years is, however, Slow Horses – which makes perfect sense if only on a sartorial level, since Jackson Lamb, the boss of a bunch of sidelined M15 agents, is even scruffier than Vera, who famously wears that green hat, long coats and an array of old scarves.

“I loved Mick Herron’s books so much that I didn’t want to watch the adaptation on telly, especially when I found out that Jackson Lamb was being played by Gary Oldman. It made no sense to me because Lamb is described as ‘Timothy Spall gone to seed’ in the books. But then Kenny [Doughty, who played DS Aiden Healy in Vera until last year] and I thought we’d watch one episode, and we raced through them. I just loved it.”

Born as Brenda Bottle, later known as Blethyn, she spent her early years in Ramsgate without a television. In fact, her childhood possessions were few. She recalls, “I had a joyful upbringing. We didn’t realize we were poor, but we certainly understood the worth of things. Everything we owned was second-hand and required careful preservation.

She shares that having numerous costly gifts wasn’t essential for her to have joyful Christmases during her childhood. Her mother being Catholic, she attended a Catholic school, but Brenda herself wasn’t baptized. Although they occasionally went carol singing, it was primarily to earn some money rather than for religious reasons. One Christmas that stands out in her memory is when she received a cradle that had been re-gifted to her – it had been repainted and new clothes were added for the same dolls, which made it all the more special!

Currently, Blethyn and her spouse typically spend Christmas with only a few close companions, including Timothy Spall (who starred with her in Mike Leigh’s film Secrets & Lies) and his wife, Shane. During the holiday season, they enjoy entertaining the Spalls. As she chuckles, Blethyn explains their tradition: “They visit us in Ramsgate, and on New Year’s Day, we take turns flying a kite.” She adds, “There seems to be something delightful about it, even though I can’t quite put my finger on why. This year, I plan to contribute by volunteering at one of the community dinners for those less fortunate. I can help serve meals or wash dishes.

Ever since I was convinced to lend a hand in a one-act play while working as a secretary for British Rail, I’ve found myself captivated by the allure of the stage and screen. By the time I turned 27, I had enrolled at the Guildford School of Acting, and at 30, I graced the stage at the National Theatre in London. Since then, I’ve been fortunate enough to participate in countless plays, TV shows, and films. Yet, I’ve always made sure to maintain a sense of humor and never take myself too seriously.

She smiled mysteriously when asked about acting with Robert Redford and Brad Pitt in the 1992 film “A River Runs Through It.” “Ah, you’re referring to Bob Redford? He made sure I got the Montana accent spot on, if I may say so myself. And Brad, he was just terrific. Down-to-earth like any other guy. His dog was present on set, and his parents would often watch us film.

Despite Blethyn relishing the chance to mix with the elite of Hollywood, she remains humble, showing no pretentiousness or interest in accolades – “It’s pleasant to receive awards, or even be nominated, but it’s just like someone complimenting a brick wall I’ve built, ‘That’s a nice wall.’

This actress is known for her role as Vera, where she consistently wore affordable £12 boots from a Birmingham shop throughout the first four seasons. Moreover, she’s unafraid to let Vera appear as unkempt as Peter Falk’s Columbo character, often causing people to comment that detectives don’t resemble Vera. However, she humorously responds by saying, “Have you ever been in a police station? Never? Then don’t be so quick to judge!

On New Year’s Day, which is January 1st, Vera season 14 will air at 8 PM on ITV1. If you want to catch up on earlier episodes, they can be found on ITVX.
