As a cinephile who has spent countless hours immersed in the rich tapestry of British television, I can’t help but feel a sense of both nostalgia and anticipation upon hearing about Brenda Blethyn‘s latest venture. At 78, this remarkable actress continues to defy expectations and grace our screens with her captivating performances.
Brenda Blethyn has clarified that she won’t be retiring from her acting career following her departure from Vera. Instead, she’s already wrapped up shooting a brand-new movie.
Earlier this year, ITV made known that the fourteenth season would mark the end of the popular crime series, Vera, with Brenda Blethyn playing the role of Detective Vera Stanhope since its premiere in 2011.
About a dozen years past, the 78-year-old looked back on the popular ITV series with Vera’s creator, Ann Cleeves, during their discussion at the British Film Institute – marking the end of an era for the show.
When someone inquired whether she was retiring from acting following the putting away of her coat (metaphorically speaking), she responded with a laugh, saying, “Not at all! I’m not retiring; I’ve simply moved to warmer climates!
Over the summer, the team wrapped up filming two full-length finale episodes, and just a week afterwards, Blethyn started shooting a fresh film that she anticipates hitting theaters in 2025.
She remembered being at home, still unpacked from her trip, when her agent phoned with news: ‘You’ve been offered a movie role.’ She responded, ‘I don’t feel like doing a movie right now, I’m not even unpacked yet.’
She replied, “It’s with Andrea Riseborough.” I responded, “Is that so?” To which she added, “It begins next week as someone had withdrawn, and it’s penned and helmed by Paul Andrew Williams.
Blethyn thinks the title of the project has been changed multiple times to Dragonfly, and he humorously mentioned that he’d likely be the one to find out last about its official launch date.
In a candid conversation, the seasoned actress shared the motivation behind her departure from the beloved show. She yearned to devote more attention to her loved ones, having spent the previous 14 summers filming in the North East without them by her side.
Although Vera’s family in Newcastle is dear to me, I also have a family that resides at home, with whom I don’t get to spend as much time as desired due to my obligations with filming,” she expressed.
Blethyn expressed her sense of pride in portraying an older woman in a fresh light as Detective Stanhope on screen, and she mentioned that ITV wished for her to carry on with the series.
She mentioned that she wasn’t aware of the retirement age for police officers, but it seemed they were content with her continuing. Given her age of 78, she would have been using a walker.
“I mean, you see more and more of older women nowadays, and I applaud it. It’s brilliant.”
Blethyn revealed that season 14 of Vera is scheduled to be released over the New Year.
Vera season 14 will arrive soon. Previous episodes are available to watch on ITVX.
