A new docuseries is taking another haunting look at Gabby Petito’s murder.
In Netflix’s American Murder: Gabby Petito, some fresh insights and supporting documents include the texts that Brian Laundrie, Gabby’s former fiancé, sent as part of his effort to establish an alibi.
When Brian was in possession of Gabby’s phone, he created a false text message exchange between them, sending messages from his phone and responding to them using hers – this was done after he had already taken her life.
August 28th, according to the documentary, Brian traveled from the last known spot he and Gabby were at within Grand Teton National Park to a different part of the park. The following day, he sent a text message from that location to Gabby’s phone saying, “Hey Sweetheart, just checking in to let you know I arrived at Colter Bay! I believe the campground might still be a bit further along the road, I’m going to go take a look. Let me know when you’re on your way, no hurry:)
In another message, Brian emphasized that Gabby shouldn’t feel pressured to come right away and expressed his excitement for her to witness the mountains reflected on the water.
After my brief excursion, I managed to secure various rides back to the Spread Creek camping site where I’d left my van—and Gabby’s phone. It wasn’t until I was back in the van and sent a message asking if she could come pick me up early that I started receiving messages from Gabby’s phone. Only then were the texts I’d sent to her read.
Absolutely, Brian,” Gabby messages, “let’s squeeze in one more night of camping off-grid, and then we’re set for TWO NIGHTS at Colter Bay!
According to FBI Special Agent Loretta Bush, the interaction between the two phones was swift and continuous. Brian appeared to be using both devices simultaneously, engaging in self-talk that seemed intended to establish an alibi.
Starting on August 30th, Brian embarked on a trip back to Florida in Gabby’s Sprinter van. During his travel, he utilized Gabby’s debit card for fuel purchases.
I, being a dedicated follower, also reached out to Gabby’s mother, Nichole Schmidt, via text, requesting a connection with Gabby’s grandfather, whom I addressed as “Stan” instead of the more traditional “Grandpa”. This was an unusual choice in my message, which Nichole found peculiar later on.
While on his way home, Brian transferred $700 from Gabby’s account to himself via Zelle, seemingly as a payment for the van. In the memo section, he wrote, “Farewell Brian, I won’t bother you for help anymore.
In the end, it was concluded that Brian was responsible for Gabby’s death. The autopsy report stated that her demise was due to a homicide inflicted by manual strangulation and severe blows to her head and neck.
Or:
The investigators found out that Brian was the one who had killed Gabby. An autopsy report confirmed her death as a homicide, caused by manual strangulation and blunt-force trauma to her head and neck.
Not long after coming back to Florida, Brian also disappeared. In October, his skeletal remains were discovered, and his death was determined to be a suicide.
Close to where Brian lay was a waterproof sack holding a notebook. Inside the notebook, the 23-year-old had penned down what appeared to be Gabby’s last moments as described, stating she had been hurt during a hike and was pleading for relief from her suffering. It was then that Brian wrote, “I ended her life.
However, as Jim Schmidt, Gabby’s stepfather, pointed out, “None of Brian’s narratives corresponded with the conclusions drawn from Gabby’s autopsy. Her death was solely due to strangulation, and there was absolutely no trace or even a remote resemblance of what he claimed.

As an ardent admirer putting words to my feelings, I’d say, “I found him a tad socially reserved yet exceptionally courteous,” was how Nichole Schmidt, Gabby Petito‘s mom, described Brian Laundrie in the gripping Netflix documentary, American Murder: Gabby Petito.
Jim Schmidt remarked that it was rather tranquil, but Joe Petito countered by saying that Brian had shaken his hand firmly and met his gaze directly.
Gabby and Brian reconnected following their high school years – it was love at first sight for him, as he’d recount the instant he spotted her outside a deli and swiftly stopped to chat with her – and by less than nine months into dating, she relocated to Florida alongside him to be near his family in December 2019.
In Florida, Gabby’s acquaintance, Rose Davis, shared that spending time with both her and Brian for the first time felt like having a parent watch over during a playdate – it was quite odd. Brian was described as very polite, but Rose recalled telling her mother later on that there was something unusual about him.
As our friendship developed, it became increasingly apparent to Rose that Brian had a growing darkness within him.
In July 2020, Brian put forth a proposal. Nicole learned that Gabby was engaged when Brian’s mother, Roberta Laundrie, announced it on Facebook.
“She didn’t want to tell anybody,” Nichole said. “I thought that was really strange.”
Gabby’s stepmother, Tara Petito, expressed a bit of surprise that Brian didn’t consult with Joe before proposing to his daughter instead.
Initially, Gabby was brimming with joy and enthusiasm. However, over time, her initial excitement seemed to wane, according to Nichole.
Gabby had a fond affection for her role at Taco Bell, a position she secured to finance her treasured 2012 Ford Transit Connect van. However, Brian admitted to feelings of neglect and a sense of ownership towards Gabby, as she shared.
Through the text messages displayed in the show, he spoke negatively about her job, referring to the colleagues she worked with as “undesirable individuals.” He expressed disdain, labeling it appalling that she had associated herself with such people.
In a manner she described, he successfully made her feel guilty for causing him distress, leading her to believe she didn’t deserve Brian’s affection. To put it simply, as Rose explained, he aimed to make her feel just as he wished her to feel.
Rose commented, “There seemed to be a point in her life prior to living in a van when she began to truly understand things.” Gabby grew increasingly “perplexed and annoyed,” as if everything was finally falling into place for her.
Even though the video showed Brian appearing friendly, it was clear that he was quite pleasant during their #VanLife adventure which started in July 2021 with Gabby behind the camera.
However, as per Rose’s account, he wasn’t particularly supportive of his fiancée’s aspirations and primarily accompanied her more for personal gain rather than genuine interest in her dreams.
Rose explained that if he managed to remove her from her job, it would also separate her from her friend, leaving only him. And suddenly, they were no longer there.
Gabby conveyed to Rose that Brian considered her vlog concept as “foolish.” However, she also pointed out, “Perhaps his concern was that truth might be captured on camera, leaving room for him to say or do something inappropriate during the recording.
On the 12th of August, 2021, I found myself, an ardent spectator, dialing 911 in dismay as I witnessed an appalling scene unfold on the side of the road in Moab, Utah. A man, with actions that sickened my heart, was striking a woman. Afterward, they sped away, their vehicle unfortunately colliding with a curb as they fled.
Footage captured by police body cameras during their interaction with Brian and Gabby on that particular day was broadcasted several weeks afterwards, as part of the probe into Gabby’s outcome.
However, it’s startling to observe that Gabby appears to assume accountability for the physical confrontation, explaining to the police that she suffered from anxiety and severe OCD, with Brian causing significant stress but attempting to soothe her.
Brian explained to the police that he had scratches on his face because he was attempting to keep Gabby from grabbing the van keys. He was trying to move away from her when this happened.
In response to the officer inquiring about the bruises on her face and arm, Gabby repeatedly replied, “I’m not sure.” However, she later explained to authorities that she had actually been shouting at the officer, suggesting that perhaps she was the one who initiated the physical altercation first, as she put it, “It seems I might have struck him initially.
According to the video evidence, one officer informed another that “it seems like she is the clear instigator in this situation.
Afterward, the officer led Brian to a local hotel famed for providing shelter to those escaping domestic abuse. Meanwhile, they handed the car keys over to Gabby, instructing her on where to find an affordable place to wash up and unwind. The officer explained that this location would help her relax a bit.
The pair were instructed to avoid any communication, be it through texts or otherwise, until the following day; however, they found themselves back together on the same night, quickly making their way towards Salt Lake City.
In the show, Rose mentioned, “I didn’t learn about their argument in Moab from her directly. However, I’ve noticed her being this distraught before, and it was usually due to issues with him.
Reflecting on the moment I learned about the 911 call and saw the police footage for the first time that fateful September, I, as Gabby’s mom Nichole, recounted in the series, “I saw my daughter looking petrified. It was then that I understood the gravity of the situation, realizing it was far worse than anything I had ever imagined.
Seeing my daughter distressed, while officers seemed more focused on jesting with Brian, left me utterly disbelieving that she was considered the aggressor instead,” Nichole explained.
Gabby’s former partner, Jackson (last name unknown), mentioned in the series that she contacted him unexpectedly on August 22, 2021. They had been dating for approximately a year before she began seeing Brian, he pointed out, and they had discussed embarking on a #VanLife journey together. Therefore, upon learning about her adventure with Brian, he felt a touch of nostalgia, but also joy for her success.
She wrote in a text displayed in the series, “It seems unlikely that I’m the one you’d choose to contact.” Yet, she mentioned that she would be available for conversation until the next day, if there was an opportunity to chat before then.
He later considered her reaching out “a cry for help.”
According to Jackson’s remembrance, over the phone, Gabby suggested they had a disagreement with Brian, and she expressed her intention of possibly parting ways with him. She needed to decide on the timing, which she shared with him.
Jackson stated, “She seemed uncertain about his actions, or what he was capable of. It appeared as though she wanted to escape, but was unsure of the best way to do so.
Gabby messaged him via Snapchat on August 27th, mentioning that Jackson Hole, Wyoming, brought back memories of him. She also phoned him later that same day at 1:45 p.m., according to Jackson, but he was occupied at work and couldn’t take the call. Since then, he hasn’t received any communication from her.
He mused, “Perhaps had I responded to the phone call, I might have been able to offer assistance or else the result may have been different.
On August 27th, I sent a message to my mom: “I’m doing well. I successfully persuaded Brian to spend the night in the woods, giving me sole use of the van. That’s something he wanted to do, and honestly, it doesn’t bother me. He agreed that I could have the van if I covered his costs.
Gabby clarified that she was not breaking up; instead, she mentioned her potential to earn more income as an independent female van-dweller. Currently, she’s on her way to a campsite.
Subsequent messages to Gabby remained unanswered. On August 30th, Nichole received a text from Gabby’s phone that seemed odd to her because it used Grandfather’s name, Stan, rather than the usual term of endearment, “grandpa.
Since there was no response from Gabby, Nicole texted Brian’s mom, Roberta, on September 10th and didn’t receive a reply. When she tried again, she noticed the bubble change from blue to green, which could mean either Roberta’s phone was turned off or Nicole might have been blocked.
In the series, Gabby’s father, Joe, made attempts to reach out to Roberta and Brian’s father, Chris Laundrie, as well as his sister, Cassie Laundrie. However, these efforts were unsuccessful, according to Joe, who also mentioned that he sent texts which were followed by calls to the police.
As a fervent admirer of the Laundries, I eagerly awaited their response when TopMob News reached out for comment regarding the ongoing case. Alas, silence was all we received through their attorney’s channel. The intriguing series hinted that they politely declined to offer any insights, maintaining a veil of mystery around their thoughts and feelings. At the time, Cassie shared her sentiments with reporters, expressing confusion about the unfolding events involving her parents and brother. She conveyed a shared sense of distress, exasperation, and sorrow, mirroring the feelings of everyone else who’s been closely following the case.
On September 11th, police officers from North Port, Florida, visited the residence of Roberta and Chris to inquire if they possessed any details regarding Gabby’s location.
The officers’ body camera recordings depict Chris stating that Brian was indoors, offering no additional comments, and suggesting they contact the family’s legal representative.
From my perspective as a lifestyle expert, I’ve been closely following the developments regarding Gabby, and it appears that the authorities in North Port and Suffolk County, where her family resided, were perplexed about their next course of action due to the lack of concrete evidence indicating a criminal act had transpired.
However, since the vehicle Brian and Gabby were using was situated in the Laundry’s driveway, and as Gabby was the only one named on the title, the authorities swiftly towed it away.
Upon discovering all these details, Nicole reminisced from the show, “My body kept trembling…I sensed something terrible had occurred.
Added Gabby’s dad Joe, “We started screaming.” Stepmom Tara said, “I collapsed.”
Friend Rose exclaimed, “To tell the truth, I completely lost my cool. I found myself shouting, ‘What on earth did he do? Did he do something at all?’
In the account provided in the series, on September 17th, Brian Laundrie’s parents told authorities that he was not at their house, they hadn’t seen him for three days, and expressed their concern by reporting him missing. This information was shared by FBI Special Agent Loretta Bush from the Tampa Division.
In his household items, the agent found a letter penned by his mother, bearing instructions for it to be burned upon being read.
You’re special to me, my love, and nothing can change that. No circumstances or actions could ever come between us. If you should find yourself in prison, I’d sneakily bake a cake with a hidden file in it. And if we ever need to dispose of something, I would be there with a shovel and garbage bags.
In the series, both Rose and Tara called the letter “disgusting.”
Nichole said, “It made me sick to my stomach.”
On the 29th of August, Brian was seen making numerous phone calls to his parents, according to Busy. This indicates they were in frequent contact with each other. We discovered that he informed them about Gabby’s absence and requested legal assistance. Following this revelation, his parents transferred money to a lawyer.
Joe recollected thinking, “Are you seriously planning to spend $25,000, money you’ve worked hard for, on a lawyer from Wyoming without knowing her location first? That sounds questionable to me.
Gabby’s stepfather, Jim, claimed that the sum wasn’t for anything other than to act as a representative for a murder case.
Remarkably, investigators discovered through cellular data that he had been sending texts to Gabby, pretending she was still alive. However, these messages weren’t read on her phone until he returned to the Spread Creek Dispersed camping area in Bridger-Teton National Forest – where her phone actually was.
According to Special Agent Bush, communication between the two phones happened quickly, as if they were in direct conversation. He was seen holding both devices and speaking as if talking to another person, which suggested he was attempting to establish an alibi.
On August 30, Brian initiated the journey towards Florida. He utilized Gabby’s debit card at several gas stations during this trip, as reported by the FBI. Additionally, he sent a text regarding Gabby’s grandfather to her mother and transferred $700 from Gabby’s account to his own via Zelle, making it appear as if she was compensating him for the vehicle.
The transaction memo read, “Goodbye Brian, I’ll never ask you for anything again.”
On September 19, 2021, the search party discovered Gabby’s remains at the Spread Creek Dispersed Camping Area, where they were officially searching.
In a cramped, curled-up stance on her left side, she wore a hooded jacket. The medical examiner concluded that she’d suffered strangulation and had marks of violent impact on her head and neck.
The agent observed in the series found her posture unnatural, which made them think she might have been killed somewhere else, suggesting that the crime scene could have been deliberately set up.
Gabby’s stepfather, Jim, had arrived in town for the search. Upon viewing a photo of her lifeless body, he said it appeared as if she was discarded like trash by someone who should have cherished her. Overwhelmed, he fell to the ground. Later, he contacted Nichole, Joe, and Tara.
Joe shared, “I received a call that I wouldn’t get to see my daughter anymore,” he lamented. They both agreed it was one of the hardest days they had ever experienced.
Joe went on to say that he often reflects on the final instances. He believes Tara must have been terrified, and whenever she was fearful, she’d reach out to him, Jim, or either Nicki or herself. However, he can’t determine who she contacted in her distress.
On October 20, the remains of Brian were discovered within the Carlton Memorial Reserve. An examination determined that his passing was due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, classified as a suicide.
Nearby, a watertight sack contained photos of Brian and Gabby, along with a waterproof journal where he penned down details about her injury and his actions to end her life as an act of mercy to alleviate her suffering.
But from that moment, he added, “I knew I couldn’t go on without her.”
Among the items inside the sack, I found several letters, one of which read, “Kindly spare my family any additional hardships; they’ve already lost both a son and a daughter.” (As a dedicated follower)
In the series, Nichole mused that it seemed peculiar to her when he specifically requested to exclude her parents from the situation, as she believed they had done nothing wrong.
According to Jim’s statement, none of Brian’s accounts were accurate based on Gabby’s autopsy results. The primary cause of her death was strangulation, which differs significantly from anything Brian had mentioned.
In a wrongful death case brought against Brian’s estate in 2022, the court granted Gabby’s family a sum of $3 million as compensation. A separate lawsuit they filed against Brian’s parents for causing them intentional and reckless emotional harm was resolved through a settlement in February 2024.
