Brian Murphy, Man About the House star and comedian, dies aged 92

Man About the House and George and Mildred star Brian Murphy has died at the age of 92.

Murphy, who sadly passed away at his residence in Kent on the 2nd of February, was reminisced by his agent Thomas Bowinton as an exceptionally jovial and deeply compassionate individual.

Linda Regan, the actress from Hi-De-Hi! and crime novelist, shared a photo with her partner on social media, accompanied by this message: “The love I have for you is eternal. Rest in peace, my dear one.

Earlier, Regan expressed that she was fortunate enough to discover her soulmate during her lifetime, a man named Brian, whom she will continue to cherish and love eternally.

1932 saw the birth of Murphy on the Isle of Wight. His acting journey commenced in the 1950s as he became part of Theatre Workshop, a groundbreaking group established by Joan Littlewood and her partner Gerry Raffles. Their mission was to revolutionize theater and attract working-class spectators by updating and modernizing performances.

In the course of events, Murphy found himself participating in numerous Shakespeare plays staged by Littlewood, and graced the screen as the lead in her solitary 1963 comedic movie titled “Sparrows Can’t Sing.

Yet, it was his part in the ITV sitcom “Man About the House” that catapulted him into stardom, as this show delved into the relationships among two women living with a man.

After Man About the House ended in 1976, Murphy appeared in the spin-off George and Mildred.

Among Murphy’s various television roles are appearances on Holby City, The Catherine Tate Show, Last of the Summer Wine, and ITV comedy Benidorm. In films, Murphy has acted in The Boy Friend and The Devils.

Social media has been overflowing with tributes, following the announcement of the actor’s death.

As a devoted cinephile, I can easily visualize him – Brian Murphy, that is – in the role of George, lounging comfortably in his bed, munching on those tangy pickled onions. This image comes to me, alas, as I pay tribute to him, following his passing. #RIPBrianMurphy #GeorgeandMildred, a classic duo we’ll always cherish.

Approximately two decades back, I had the pleasure of being introduced to Brian Murphy for the first time by my filmmaker friend, Stanley Long. As a huge fan of Man About The House, encountering him was an exciting moment for me.

Simon Sheridan expressed that Brian Murphy was exceptionally kind, articulate, and remarkably warm-hearted. Everything that’s been said about him rings true. Farewell, Brian Murphy, #RestInPeaceBrianMurphy.

Murphy is survived by his wife, Regan, and his two sons.
