As a child of the ’80s, I can’t help but feel a wave of nostalgia hearing about the revival of RoboForce. The original toys and the movie were a significant part of my formative years, even if the movie didn’t exactly set the world on fire! But hey, if you want to watch it, you’ve got to get your hands on the Challenge of the Go-Bots vol. 2 DVD from Warner Archive.
The revamped toy line from the ’80s, RoboForce, which Nacelle recently acquired and has received a direct-to-series greenlight for a new animated series, is expected to make its debut much sooner than anticipated. During ComicCon International in San Diego last month, Brian Volk-Weiss of Nacelle revealed that the aim is to release the show within the next few months, although he couldn’t definitively say it would come out in 2024.
Established in 1984 by Ruby-Spears, the aim was to develop a multi-platform franchise that could generate sales of toys, with the narrative progression following a continuous loop similar to series like GI Joe and Transformers. However, unlike these successful franchises, there was only one movie – Robo Force: The Revenge of Nazgar – that didn’t achieve widespread acclaim. Interestingly, the only way to officially view this film is by purchasing the Challenge of the Go-Bots vol. 2 DVD from Warner Archive, where the Robo Force movie serves as a bonus feature.
When asked by Chris Killian, he mentioned that he isn’t able to disclose the specific launch date, however, he strongly hinted that it’s very probable that it will take place this year.
In honor of the fifth year since the launch of The Toys That Made Us, Volk-Weiss recently shared insights on the origin of the Robo Force toy line in a conversation with egmr.ru.
In Volk-Weiss’s own words, things didn’t follow a predefined plan. Instead of watching ‘Toys That Made Us’ and then jumping into toy production three months later, he explained that serendipity played a significant role. A man named Michael Goodman, who was impressed by Volk-Weiss’s brand, reached out and suggested they could collaborate. Normally, such offers would be risky for Volk-Weiss, but this time it paid off.
Here’s the official synopsis for RoboForce:
In the year 2089, the animated series “RoboForce” unfolds, introducing the upgraded RoboForce by Soraya Aviram, designed to aid an alien society on Earth. However, on the same day as the unveiling, Soraya’s competitor, Silas Duke, launched his Utopia Aegis 101 series of robots, rendering RoboForce instantly outdated. For fifteen years, the once-heroic RoboForce were relegated to lowly jobs with no prospects of regaining their hero status… That is, until an unexpected virus infected the Utopia Aegis 101 units, causing them to attack humanity. With nobody else capable of stopping this threat, it falls on Maxx 89 and the rest of RoboForce to save humanity from destruction.
The TV series will have Brian Volk-Weiss serving as both the executive producer and director, joined by Cisco Henson, Matt Kravitsky, Michael Goodman, Tom Stern, and Gavin Hignight in their executive producer roles for Nacelle. Additionally, Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, and Brian Gewirtz will represent Seven Bucks Productions as executive producers.
