In the third season, Benedict delved into his sexuality with Hannah New’s character, Lady Tilley Arnold, and her companion, Lucas Aurelio’s character, Paul Suarez. However, it appears that he is now attracted to a different lady.
According to Variety, the fourth season of “Bridgerton” shifts its attention to Benedict, the free-spirited second son. Despite his older and younger brothers being married, Benedict shows no interest in settling down – that is, until he encounters a mesmerizing Lady at his mother’s masquerade ball.
In the fourth season of the show, we’ll be adapting “An Offer From a Gentleman,” the third book by Julia Quinn from the Bridgerton series. This time, we’ll follow Benedict as he encounters a mysterious woman in silver, but later discovers, to his surprise, that she is the very person he has harbored feelings for over many years without realizing it, having not seen her again for two whole years.
Regarding Yerin’s character Sophie, it’s yet to be determined how she will develop on the series. However, in the book, she is revealed as the illegitimate daughter of an earl, who finds herself serving as a maid for her late father’s wife and stepsisters following his demise.

In the novel “Romancing Mister Bridgerton,” the situation differs significantly for character Penelope, who is 28 years old in the story, as it takes place in 1824 – ten years after Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey) married Kate Sharma (Simone Ashley). Unlike other women of her time, Penelope is considered an old maid and her change in fashion is more a result of her mother finally allowing her independence after she remains unmarried. However, unlike the typical response to this situation, Penelope does not rush to find a husband, although she does express anxiety about being stuck with her mother for the rest of her life.

In season three, Colin plays a charismatic newcomer, but just like his character on the series, Book Colin’s development follows a unique path distinct from that of Show Colin.
In the novel, he is significantly older, around 33 years, and has been journeying extensively for quite some time, not just a few months as portrayed in the series. He seldom stays at home, and he grapples with discovering his purpose, an issue that doesn’t seem to worry him as much on the show.
Just as one might become increasingly captivated by a series on a streaming platform like Netflix, so too does he find himself growing more attracted to Penelope throughout the book. A significant portion of his time is spent in admiration of her kindness, humor, and beauty – traits that he, along with the rest of society, had previously overlooked.
As a dedicated follower, I found myself deeply engrossed in both the novel and series when emotions between Colin and Penelope reached a pinnacle. In the book, Penelope, being Eloise Bridgerton’s closest friend (Claudia Jessie), happened to be visiting the Bridgertons. On the other hand, in the show, Penelopa was at Colin’s house in episode two, secretly receiving flirting tutoring from him. The incident of her accidentally-on-purpose reading his travel diaries served as a catalyst for their emotional turmoil.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but notice the intriguing similarities and differences between the written word and the visual spectacle that is Colin’s injury. In the book, it was a sleek letter opener that took its toll on him, while in the show, it was an unfortunate incident with a shattered candle holder. Either way, it leaves me on the edge of my seat, wondering what will happen next!
Regardless, it’s as she is wrapping his hand that Colin really notices Penelope.
In the story, Polin experiences his first kiss when Penelope boldly requests a kiss from him, explaining that she would rather never have been kissed at all if he refuses to oblige.
In the comfort of my living room, as I tuned into episode two, the climactic scene unfolded on screen, revealing to the entire town that Penelope sought Colin’s assistance in securing a suitable partner.
In the book, the kiss takes place in the Featherington’s drawing room, as Colin pays a visit to Penelope to convey his concern that he believes his sister Eloise might be Lady Whistledown (whose voice is provided by Julie Andrews).

In the finale of episode four, Netflix opted to have the kiss and marriage proposition occur inside the Featherington coach. This significant moment took place immediately following Colin’s actions that jeopardized Penelope’s relationship with Lord Debling (portrayed by Sam Phillips).
He doesn’t yet know that she’s Lady Whistledown, basically the Regency era DeuxMoi. In fact, episode one ends with Colin expressing his hatred for Lady Whistledown after she wrote some not-so-nice things about his “new” personality following his travels, telling sister Eloise that he will ruin whoever Whistledown really is.
In the novel, Polin’s kiss and engagement take place within Colin’s coach following his pursuit of Penelope into town, where he uncovers her stunning secret: she is none other than Lady Whistledown herself. Consequently, Colin enters their union knowing about her dual existence.
Francesca Bridgerton (formerly Hannah Dodd) is often perceived as the overlooked Bridgerton child not due to lack of family affection, but rather because, much like her screen portrayal, she herself enjoys a tranquil and composed lifestyle.
In the book series, it’s briefly mentioned that Francesca met her husband seven years prior to where Penelope and Colin’s story begins. In the TV series, Golda Rosheuvel’s character, Queen Charlotte, is crowned as the standout figure of the season. She finds herself attracting not one but two suitors: Lord Samadani, chosen by the Queen (portrayed by David Mumeni), and her preferred suitor, John Stirling, Earl of Kilmartin (played by Victor Alli). Regrettably, in the books, there is no character equivalent to Queen Charlotte, so there’s no “diamond” selection for any season.
Fortunately for her, she and John discover their perfect match in each other and decide on a cozy home wedding, an event not detailed in the books. The duo subsequently relocate to Scotland, where more of their tale unfolds. As for Francesca’s future, we’ll keep it under wraps, but those intrigued by spoilers can delve deeper into her storyline in the sixth Bridgerton novel titled “When He Was Wicked.”
Viewers who have only seen the series might find it unexpected that by the time Colin and Penelope become a couple in the books, Benedict has been married for seven years and is an accomplished artist (as depicted in book three, An Offer from a Gentleman, which Netflix chose to bypass in favor of book four, detailing his love story).

Upon discovering Colin and Penelope’s relationship, she expresses nothing but joy for them. Throughout “Romancing Mister Bridgerton”, there are also suggestions about Eloise’s upcoming storyline, which will be fully explored in book five, titled “To Sir Phillip, With Love”.
Regarding Cressida, the series portrays her as single, whereas in the book, she’s a widow. Despite this change in marital status, she remains a bother for Colin and Penelope. I’ll delve deeper into her character shortly.
Lord Debling, a man deeply enamored with nature, has become this season’s most sought-after eligible bachelor—and he has captured the heart of Cressida Cowper. However, it’s essential to note that Lord Debling is a character specifically crafted for the show and primarily serves as a catalyst to help Penelope break out of her shell. Yet, more crucially, his role is to ultimately bring Colin and Penelope closer together, marking a significant turning point in their relationship.
Sadly, while it was thrilling to see Colin rescue Penelope (with a little help from Lord Debling), it should be noted that the hot air balloon incident and the rather uncomfortable discussion about feathered creatures were entirely fabricated for the sake of our television program.
One significant shift for the Featherington family is that the series no longer includes Felicity, the fourth Featherington daughter who shares a strong bond with Penelope and was also close friends with Hyacinth Bridgerton (previously known as Florence Hunt).
In the novels, Mrs. Featherington (Polly Walker) sees Felicity as her final opportunity for a prestigious match for one of her daughters, even proposing that she marry Colin. The Featherington family, on the other hand, is experiencing fewer financial difficulties due to Penelope’s clandestine use of Whistledown funds for their needs. This secret maneuvering was assisted by their solicitor, who, intriguingly enough, had previously encouraged her to write her column and facilitated all the necessary arrangements with the publisher and a bank account.
Regarding sisters Prudence (Bessie Carter) and Phillippa (Harriet Cains), on the television series they compete to give birth to a son and uphold the Featherington lineage. However, in the books, their roles are less significant and they are married to entirely different individuals.
In the series, Prudence is wed to James Phoon, who goes by Harry Dankworth in the books, while her counterpart in the novels is married to a man named Robert Huxley. Similarly, Phillippa’s spouse in season three is Lorn Macdonald, known as Albion Finch in the books, whereas in the written works she ties the knot with Nigel Berbrooke, who may remind you of one of Daphne’s rude suitors from season one.
In both the book and the show, Violet Bridgerton (Ruth Gemmell) is busy finding partners for her unmarried children. Book Violet has also long moved out of the Bridgerton house, and now lives at what the family loving calls Number Five (as they joke they couldn’t come up with a better name). And while author Julia Quinn never gives a glimpse of Violet’s life after all her children are married, season three hints at a possible romance for the Bridgerton matriarch with Lady Danbury’s (Adjoa Andoh) brother Lord Marcus (Daniel Francis)—who does not exist in the books.
In the Bridgerton series, characters Hyacinth and Gregory Tilston (Will Tilston), the youngest siblings, are portrayed as older individuals in the fourth novel. At this point in the story, Hyacinth is participating in her debut season and Gregory is wrapping up his university studies at Cambridge, while in the show they remain secondary characters during their elder siblings’ dramas. However, it is suggested that future seasons may bring more focus on them as Hyacinth’s love story unfolds in book seven, “It’s in His Kiss,” and Gregory’s story takes shape in book eight, “On the Way to the Wedding.”
In the book, after Colin proposes, they visit the Featherington residence to announce their engagement. A comedic scene unfolds as Mrs. Featherington initially believes Colin is courting Felicity instead. Later, Colin defends Penelope’s virtues to her mother, which leaves Penelope feeling flattered. This interaction particularly endears him to her.
In the TV series, it’s revealed that the pair initially visit the Bridgerton residence, where everyone seems delighted – except Eloise, because she’s displeased that Penelope has yet to inform Colin about her secret identity as Lady Whistledown.
In my account, the book I’m referring to doesn’t delve deeply into the details of Colin and Penelope’s wedding; it merely mentions that it was a modest event, and by subtly hinting to Lady Bridgerton and Lady Featherington about our intimacy, we managed to expedite the date by several weeks.
In “Romancing Mr. Bridgerton,” before proposing to Penelope, Colin discovers her hidden truth. Although he’s angry she hid it from him, he’s also amazed and slightly envious by the extraordinary path she’s taken in life. However, he genuinely wishes for her to cease writing, a conflict that escalates when Penelope’s article about Cressida not being Whistledown is published during their engagement ball. But, as the story unfolds, Colin manages to reconcile with Penelope’s secret and even plays an active part in helping her expose it.
It’s clear that Colin struggles to reconcile his feelings towards Pen and Lady Whistledown. He adores Pen, yet harbors intense dislike for Lady Whistledown. Consequently, the couple spent a significant portion of the second half of the season separated as Colin grapples with these conflicting emotions.
In “Romancing Mister Bridgerton,” Lady Danbury is on a quest to uncover the identity of Lady Whistledown and even puts forth a £1,000 bounty for her discovery. However, in the show, it’s Queen Charlotte who offers the reward, but this time it’s a significant increase to £5,000.
Prior to Penelope’s true identity being disclosed, Cressida steps forward, pretending to be Lady Whistledown, with the intention of seizing the reward. In the novel, Cressida finds herself in a financial predicament after her husband’s demise and sees this as an opportunity to claim the monetary prize.
Regarding Character Cressida, her situation is unique since her parents intend to wed her to an old nobleman. Believing that revealing herself as Whistledown could net her the £5,000, she hopes to dodge this arranged marriage instead.
As a lifestyle expert, I’d rephrase it like this: In both the novel and the series, Cressida uncovers Penelope’s hidden truth in unique ways. In the book, she discovers it’s Penelope due to their shared use of distinctive phrases, as Penelope employs them in her real life, just as she does in her Whistledown column. On the other hand, in the show, Cressida learns Penelope’s secret from a printing shop apprentice. And either way, Cressida aims to use this knowledge for blackmail, threatening to expose Penelope unless she receives £10,000.
However, it seems Colin is the one who informs them. At his sister Daphne’s grand ball with husband Simon, Colin publicly expresses his affection for his wife, only to then unveil Penelope’s true identity. As planned, both Anthony and Simon swiftly rally behind Penelope, making it challenging for the guests to remain angry at her.
In the television program, Penelope instead of waiting for others, proactively extends an invitation to Queen Charlotte for her sisters’ dance event. Later, she presents her situation before the high society and makes a plea, hoping for the Queen’s support. Fortunately, her strategy pays off, as Queen Charlotte shows her approval.
As a devoted fan, I had the pleasure of witnessing the love tale of the eldest Bridgerton sibling, Anthony, and his wife Kate, unfold last season – inspired by the book “The Viscount Who Loved Me“. In contrast to the books’ portrayal where they’ve been married for a decade, this new season sees them as newlyweds, residing within Bridgerton House alongside Anthony’s mother, and eagerly anticipating their first child together.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but be smitten just like the newlyweds! It’s truly heartening to see this deep affection, which miraculously unfolds not only on the screen but also between the pages of the story.
In the third season, the characters of former boxer and gentlemen’s club owner Will Mondrich (played by Martins Imhangbe) and his wife Alice Mondrich (portrayed by Emma Naomi) are not directly featured in the books, but they have a captivating narrative. This includes their integration into high society, as well as Will deciding to sell his club to meet the approval of the upper class.
Readers of the series might find it surprising to discover that book four marks the last appearance of Lady Whistledown in the Bridgerton saga. Following the unveiling of her true identity, Penelope feels that penning as Whistledown for nearly 12 years is sufficient, and thus she makes the decision to step down from her role.
