In the horror film “Wolf Man,” actor Christopher Abbott portrayed a werewolf, mercilessly endangering his family. Now, he switches roles to safeguard sheep in “Bring Them Down,” a drama about a territorial conflict, directed by writer-director Christopher Andrew.
In the desolate, far-off west of Ireland, I find myself, a humble sheep farmer named Michael, sharing my days with my ailing father Ray (Colm Meaney), who’s bound to our home due to his troublesome legs and knees. Each day, after I’ve seen to our flock, he criticizes me from the kitchen table – a reminder of why his wife left him, as we learn in the film’s opening scene when she reveals their tragic past, culminating in a life-altering car accident. This somber and dark introduction sets the stage for what promises to be a profoundly moving story.
In simpler terms, Michael’s sister Caroline (played by Nora-Jane Noone) is now married to a man named Gary (Paul Ready). Gary is not a kind person and has a bitter attitude. He involves their son Jack (Barry Keoghan) in a minor theft, stealing two rams from Michael’s herd. This small act of theft soon turns into a violent conflict that quickly spirals out of control with no easy resolution. In one especially troubling scene, Jack and his friend destroy Michael’s entire flock to sell the hind legs as cheap meat. Both families are likely to suffer as a result of this situation.
In “Bring Them Down,” we witness two families spiraling into chaos against a grim backdrop, accompanied by an unconventional and at times experimental soundtrack. At the heart of this are outstanding performances from both Abbott and Keoghan, ably supported by Meaney, Ready, and Noone – all known for their authentic accents that could make Pharrell Williams’ “Happy” sound like a solemn elegy.
In essence, the movie focuses on intense family conflicts, minor disputes escalating into severe issues, and an excessive manifestation of toxic masculinity with few prospects for resolution or escape from their chosen lifestyle. Despite its somber and melancholic tone, it’s the powerful acting that captivates viewers.
