Actress Britt Lower is set to star in her first horror movie, the psychological thriller titled “Sender“. This role represents a notable milestone for Lower, whose portrayal of Helly R., the rebellious character in “Severance“, has held viewers spellbound since 2022. In “Sender“, a woman’s life takes a chilling turn when she becomes the victim of an e-commerce package delivery scam, leading her to compulsively pursue the mysterious sender of these packages. This project brings Lower together with a talented cast, including David Dastmalchian, known for his work in horror, Anna Baryshnikov, an emerging talent, and Jamie Lee Curtis, a horror icon who is also producing through her Comet Pictures banner. The film is being directed by Russell Goldman, a first-time feature director, who is adapting his own award-winning 2022 short film “Return to Sender“, which received industry recognition when its feature screenplay made it onto the 2023 Black List of highly-regarded unproduced scripts. As reported by “Deadline“, production for this movie is currently in progress.
Actor Dastmalchian is now part of the cast, having just come from his lauded leading role in the chilling supernatural horror success “Late Night with the Devil“, where he brilliantly played a 1970s talk show host whose career-rescuing broadcast takes a horrifying turn. In recent years, this actor has subtly made a name for himself in the horror genre with roles in “The Boogeyman” and “The Last Voyage of the Demeter“, developing a unique screen presence that instantly lends authenticity to horror-themed projects.
Beyond that, Curtis’s participation in the project lends a substantial history of horror expertise, both as an actor and a director. Kicking off her career portraying Laurie Strode in John Carpenter’s iconic 1978 film Halloween, she solidified her “scream queen” persona with roles in The Fog, Prom Night, and Terror Train. Over the years, Curtis has nurtured a deep connection with this genre. She recently concluded her 45-year portrayal of Strode in last year’s Halloween Ends, while also branching out into production with Comet Pictures. “I am thrilled to be involved in Russell’s debut film, the start of many more,” Curtis expressed. “The idea that Comet Pictures brought to life has now bloomed into a movie brimming with gifted artists and an innovative director.” The venture continues Curtis’s collaborative journey with Goldman, following their previous work on the horror graphic novel Mother Nature for Titan Comics.
Britt Lower Is Perfect For Horror
In a seamless progression, it seems that Lower’s shift towards horror roles is fitting, considering the intense psychological aspect of “Severance.” As the character who defies office norms yet uncovers her link to the corporate dynasty behind the series’ haunting work environment, Lower delivers a performance brimming with traits characteristic of effective horror acting. Her skill in conveying escalating fear while simultaneously keeping viewers emotionally involved has been praised by critics as a notable aspect of the acclaimed Apple TV+ show. Despite being classified as sci-fi, it often uses horror methods to unsettle its audience.
As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I can’t help but recognize the chilling impact of horror classics on “Severance.” Creator Dan Erickson has openly admitted this influence, especially in interviews where he discusses how the show skillfully adopts eerie visual styles reminiscent of masters like Stanley Kubrick and David Lynch to weave an unsettling web of contained fear. The second season took a darker turn, delving deeper into genuinely horrifying landscapes that demanded the intense emotional range often seen in horror acting. With “Severance” getting renewed for a thrilling third season and my star rising with the upcoming Netflix limited series “I Will Find You,” it’s an exhilarating time to be part of this terrifying journey!
You can watch Britt Lower in Severance on Apple TV+.
