Broadway’s Genie Michael James Scott Shares Disney Aspirations

Broadway's Genie Michael James Scott Shares Disney Aspirations

As a longtime fan of Broadway and Disney, I was absolutely thrilled to hear Michael James Scott‘s aspirations for the future! His passion for creating something new, especially a queer cubby chocolate character, is inspiring. It’s not every day you get to see someone put such heart into their dreams and make them public like that.

The San Diego Comic-Con has passed, leaving behind a trail of thrilling activities. On one particular Thursday evening, the 10th Annual Her Universe Fashion Show unfolded, with Ashley Eckstein, founder of Her Universe and voice actor for Ahsoka, joining forces with Broadway star Michael James Scott to host the event. ComicBook had an opportunity to converse with these two individuals about the fashion show, during which they shared insights into their collaboration, having been friends for many years. Given that Scott is now playing Genie on Broadway in Aladdin, we inquired about any additional Disney roles he aspires to play.

Scott mentioned, “It’d be fantastic if we could team up for something interesting!” He added, “That sounds like a blast! Creating something new seems appealing. I’ve always dreamt of voicing an animated movie character, and I have this idea about a little cubby chocolate queer kid. I think exploring its story and being part of that world excites me greatly. It feels cool, significant even. However, I believe we should chat more about it. I’m actually contemplating suggesting this as something fun for us to collaborate on.”

Scott shared his thoughts when asked about Disney movies he’d like on stage, saying “It’s intriguing to consider how they might date it, but I adore ‘Pocahontas.’ Delving into the process of understanding the rich cultural history of our Native American forebears and presenting that in a unique way, I believe, would be fascinating. The music is simply stunning, and I think it would be a blast to witness that. Naturally, Princess Tiana on stage would also be amazing.”

Scott shared with ComicBook that he became part of the project thanks to his longtime friend Ashley Eckstein. They go back to their high school days, and when the opportunity came up last year, she asked him if he’d be her co-host for the show. He admitted he didn’t know what to expect, but then he discovered this amazing, brilliant fandom world of Her Universe, fashion, and it was mind-blowing in so many ways. This introduction to the project happened thanks to Ms. Eckstein, making it a very stylish entry into this realm.

“Scott emphasized repeatedly the designers’ skills and their milestone of ten years in business,” he said. “Ten years is truly impressive, so it’s worth noting. In fact, it’s a massive achievement… It’s incredible! So I believe it’s important to recognize the impact this work and Her Universe have made over these past ten years, highlighting their fashion greatness.”
