Bruce Campbell Teases Hysteria!: "Cool Horror With a Twist"

As a seasoned gamer and fan of both cinema and the supernatural, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement bubbling within me upon hearing about Bruce Campbell‘s latest project, “Hysteria!”. Having grown up watching the Evil Dead trilogy and later witnessing his exceptional performance as Pizza Poppa in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, I’ve come to expect nothing but top-notch horror from this veteran actor.

As a die-hard fan, I’ve always admired Bruce Campbell for his unforgettable portrayal of Ash in the Evil Dead series. But there’s so much more to this talented actor! He’s made an appearance in Marvel’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as Pizza Poppa, and you might recognize him from shows like Burn Notice, Sky High, Bubba Ho-Tep, and many others. Right now, he’s working on a new project called Hysteria!, a “satanic panic” series set to premiere on Peacock next month. Recently, I got the chance to chat with Campbell at San Diego Comic-Con, and he gave us a sneak peek into what we can anticipate from this exciting new show.

Campbell playfully hinted that he might reveal too much, but promised to share just the right amount. He described the horror as intriguing, with elements of both psychological and demonic/satanic themes. The story is set in a small town in rural Michigan during the late ’80s, where he portrays Chief Dandridge. What drew him to the role was the quality of the script. These days, he explained, a new horror project needs strong writing to catch his attention because not all offers are worthwhile. The script for this production created detailed characters and a vivid town setting.

He went on to say, “If such an event took place in a bustling metropolis, it would likely be overlooked. However, this is a quaint town, and the residents are not accustomed to this kind of disturbance. They’re uncertain about the direction the situation will take, nor can they predict its outcome or severity because the authenticity of the incident is questionable. This type of horror, where you ask yourself, ‘Did I really just witness that?’ is my favorite. The show features unexpected moments that leave viewers wondering, ‘What was that?’ before moving to another scene. It’s quite intriguing.”

Campbell added, “I couldn’t share too much with you since I don’t fully understand the complexities myself. What appeals to me is that it feels like the ’80s, as there’s no texting. Instead, people make phone calls, and if someone isn’t available, the phone just keeps ringing. You can’t leave a message or interrupt a call in progress. There are no call waiting features either. The environment is also filled with ashtrays, pens, pencils, and paper – it’s all very basic, like a police station from that era.”

At the beginning of this page, you’ll find our interview with Campbell. The show “Hysteria!” will start streaming on Peacock on October 13th.
