Bucky and Walker: Captain America’s Allies Turned Nightmares in Thunderbolts!

In the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film, the Thunderbolts, Captain America’s two dearest companions have switched sides and are part of this team. This movie revolves around a motley crew of characters who join forces to confront a worldwide danger. Despite Captain America’s extensive history of battling villains like Red Skull and Hydra, he is unprepared for the transformed form that Red Skull has assumed in the latest issue of The Ultimates (#10). Here, Red Skull manipulates those closest to Captain America, distorting them into his twisted likeness. This plot unfolds in the tenth issue of The Ultimates. SPOILER ALERT: spoilers for Ultimates #10

Issue #10 of Ultimates features the creative team of Deniz Camp, Juan Frigeri, Federico Blee, and VC’s Travis Lanham. In this issue, the Avengers from the Ultimate Universe infiltrate the Red Skulls’ stronghold to rescue Namor the Sub-Mariner, a former teammate of Captain America’s Invaders group. Unlike in previous portrayals, the Red Skull is not just one individual, but rather a neo-Nazi movement that has taken on his ideology. The group calling themselves the Red Skulls have also adopted the Punisher’s skull symbol. Leading this movement is a mysterious figure known as the Grand Skull, who wears a Red Skull helmet to conceal their identity.

Unfortunately, when the Ultimates open their discovery, they find Namor – a character thought to be long gone – hanging on the wall like an artistic display. When Captain America confronts the Grand Skull, the villain summons assistance in the form of John Walker, once known as U.S. Agent.

John Walker joins the Ultimate Universe’s Red Skull gang

According to Grand Skull, it’s been discovered that John Walker has been a dedicated admirer of content associated with the Red Skull. Originally, John was among several individuals who were intended by Tony Stark to embark on a heroic journey. However, this journey was hijacked by the Maker, and the same fate befell characters like Spider-Man, Wasp, and Giant-Man, who embraced their roles. Regrettably, John chose to align himself with the Red Skulls, with Grand Skull urging John to use a vial of super-soldier serum and join their hate-fueled group.

In our understanding, U.S. Agent doesn’t have a prolonged battle against Captain America. When John Walker rushes at Cap brandishing two knives, the Human Torch (Jim Hammond) suddenly appears and sets John’s head ablaze with fire. U.S. Agent emits a piercing scream and collapses to the ground clutching his burning head. The only reaction Grand Skull manages is a disapproving “Hmph”.

Debuting in Captain America #323 from 1986, which was written by Mark Gruenwald and Paul Neary, the character known as U.S. Agent made his first appearance under the alias Super-Patriot. Later on, John Walker took over the role of Captain America, with Steve Rogers vacating it. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Wyatt Russell portrays John Walker/U.S. Agent, making his debut in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Additionally, John Walker is part of the cast for Marvel’s upcoming series, Thunderbolts.

Captain America’s former sidekick Bucky Barnes is the new Red Skull

Moving on with the storyline, as Grand Skull vanishes, his helmet breaks slightly, offering a brief glimpse of his eye to both readers and Captain America. Before disappearing, Grand Skull taunts Captain America by pointing out their shared trait: being symbols rather than mere men. He adds that such symbols don’t die, but rather reappear in new forms.

In a surprising twist, Ultimates #10 reveals that the person Captain America encountered before disappearing was actually Bucky Barnes, disguised as Grand Skull. This revelation comes about when Human Torch conducts a voice comparison, uncovering a 90% match with James Buchanan Barnes.

To put it simply, it’s a real gut-punch to me, standing as Captain America, to learn that Bucky Barnes isn’t the friend I once knew. I guess I thought he was gone for good, just like in the main Marvel Universe. But instead of resurfacing as the Winter Soldier, this Bucky has taken a different path, aligning himself with the teachings of the Red Skull. It’s a tough pill to swallow, knowing that two of my closest allies have aligned themselves with our enemy, and another, Namor, is no longer with us.

In the comic series “Thunderbolts,” the main characters include Bucky Barnes, John Walker, the Soviet super-soldier known as Red Guardian, ex-Red Room assassins Yelena Belova and Taskmaster, and tech thief Ghost. Regarding “Ultimates,” we may not delve into the revelation of Bucky Barnes and the Red Skull right away, as the Ultimate Universe is moving towards the return of the Maker, which will undoubtedly bring a lot of drama.
