It appears that “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” could soon be back on our screens, as indicated by a recent report from Deadline. On Monday, they received information from sources close to the deal suggesting that Hulu is almost ready to commission a pilot for this revival series, with Sarah Michelle Gellar set to reprise her role as Buffy Summers. The pilot script will be penned by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman, writers of “Poker Face,” and directed by Chloé Zhao, director of “Eternals.” There’s a lot of buzz about the possibility of a series order, and it seems that a writers’ room is currently being established. Additionally, it’s likely that some stars from the original series will make a comeback. However, the series still needs to go through the pilot process before it can secure a full-fledged order.
According to reports, this revival is said to delve into “the subsequent chapter of the Buffyverse,” continuing the story from where the initial show ended. Notably, however, the project does not involve creator Joss Whedon. The executive producers for this endeavor include Sarah Michelle Gellar, Marti Noxon (Zhao), and the Zuckerman sisters, as well as original series executives Gail Berman, Fran Kuzui, Kaz Kuzui, and Dolly Parton.
The character Buffy the Vampire Slayer has traveled a winding path to reach where it is now. Originally, Joss Whedon had written it as a movie script, but he wasn’t content with the 1992 film adaptation. He then transformed this concept into a TV drama that ran from 1997-2003, garnering a devoted fanbase along the way. Even before the original show ended, it was spun off into another series called Angel, which continued until 2004. The Buffyverse also includes numerous books and comics, and fans eagerly await its return to the screen.
Despite the buzz surrounding a potential revival of Buffy, I, Sarah, have traditionally been hesitant about it. However, my stance shifted positively for the first time in December, largely due to the intriguing premise of the Dexter prequel Original Sin. Now, I’m honored to join the new series as a special guest star, and my experience working on it has significantly altered my perspective on reboots. This was evident during my recent interview on The Drew Barrymore Show.
Initially, I’d often say no, as Buffy was so flawless and self-contained. But after watching shows like Sex and the City and Dexter, I began to understand there are diverse ways to tell a story. It certainly sparks thoughts like, “Well, maybe,” Gellar admitted. Asked about a potential prequel for Buffy, she added, “No, it doesn’t have to be a prequel. It could be anything. It’s a universe. In this world, we need those heroes more than ever.
As a fellow enthusiast, I can’t predict exactly when we’ll uncover more about this pilot news or how extensive it might be, but rest assured, Buffy fans, our hope remains vibrant. For the moment, you can catch “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” on Hulu and Tubi right now. And if you’re an Angel fan too, good news! You can stream that on Hulu as well.
