In a recent Instagram live session where he signed autographs, actor James Marsters gave his initial thoughts on Hulu’s upcoming continuation of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” Known for playing vampire Spike in the original series, Marsters commented on the news that Sarah Michelle Gellar would reprise her role as Buffy Summers alongside a new main character. The pilot will be directed by Academy Award winner Chloé Zhao, while Nora and Lilla Zuckerman are responsible for writing the series. They’ll collaborate with original producers such as Gail Berman, Fran Kuzui, Kaz Kuzui, and Dolly Parton to broaden the supernatural world that enthralled viewers in 1997. This new adaptation marks the only successful endeavor to prolong the show since its end in 2003; earlier attempts, including a proposed reboot in 2018, never came to fruition.

I apologize for any disappointment, but it’s best not to share anything about the project at this time so it can be its best. However, I share your excitement for the series’ comeback! Given the current state of things, I think we all could use more Buffy Summers and her heroic adventures.
Marsters also felt inspired by the river to unveil some behind-the-scenes facts about his unexpected casting as Spike, one of the show’s longest-lasting characters. He admitted, “I was cast as Spike only three days before filming began, and I later learned that they had been searching for someone for quite a while but couldn’t find him until just three days remained. So, I didn’t have much time to prepare for the role of Spike.” The actor further divulged an unexpected source of inspiration for his memorable portrayal. “In my first scene where I was stalking Buffy in a club, I decided to mimic Rutger Hauer from Blade Runner. He had a distinctive way of speaking, so I modeled that scene after him, essentially panicking,” Marsters shared.
A New Era for Buffy the Vampire Slayer
The initial “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” crafted by Joss Whedon, significantly reshaped television with its pioneering method of storytelling within genres. It received high praise for flipping horror conventions on their head while delving into profound topics using supernatural symbols. This unique style paved the way for numerous shows, such as “Supernatural” and “Legacies,” by setting a precedent for blending genre aspects with character-centric plots. The character Spike, played by Marsters, symbolized this intricate storytelling, evolving from an attractive antagonist into a multidimensional antihero whose narrative arcs extended across both “Buffy” and its sequel series “Angel.
In a unique twist, the revival of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” on Hulu stands out due to Sarah Michelle Gellar’s active involvement, an aspect that was absent in past attempts. Interestingly, the actress, who initially had reservations about reprising her role, has now agreed to take on both the leading part and the executive producer role, indicating a strong artistic alignment with Zhao’s vision. The director, renowned for the intimate character exploration of “Nomadland” and the grand scale of “Eternals,” brings invaluable expertise in blending personal drama with fantasy.
Originally aired “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and its spin-off “Angel” can still be found on Hulu, giving fans a chance to revisit the pioneering series that laid the groundwork for this fresh take on Buffy’s journey. Are you thrilled about the upcoming Hulu revival? Share your thoughts below!
