Buffy Reboot Leaks “Fake,” Says Sarah Michelle Gellar (Is That a Good Thing?)

Sarah Michelle Gellar has dismissed rumors about the cast of Hulu’s remake of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” Although there have been discussions about reviving the supernatural series, nothing has moved forward yet. The original show concluded in 2003 but produced a spin-off titled “Angel” starring David Boreanaz, and numerous comics and novels that expanded the universe of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” However, it’s true that “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” is returning, with award-winning director Chloé Zhao (known for “Nomadland” and “Eternals”) collaborating with Gellar on a fresh take of “Buffy” for a new audience. A recent leak disclosed some potential characters for the revival of “Buffy,” but Gellar asserts that the information in the leak is not correct.

In a recent conversation with Elite Daily, Sarah Michelle Gellar clarified that reports about the upcoming “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” reboot, specifically those mentioning three characters including a 16-year-old Slayer named Nova who was said to be the lead, are untrue. She labeled these rumors as “fake.

“Those are all fake characters,” Gellar said. “That thing that got released is all fake.”

It’s been stated that the upcoming version of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” would feature a new group of characters, similar to the Scooby Gang: Nova, a brainy loner from a wealthy background; Hugo, an open gay individual; and Gracie, a young vampire expert who admires Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Buffy. Gellar is expected to make occasional guest appearances. Nova is portrayed as being intelligent yet somewhat solitary, with characteristics reminiscent of Willow rather than Buffy, indicating a marked shift from the original cheerleader-turned-vampire hunter character played by Sarah Michelle Gellar.

Gellar also discussed her reasons for choosing Zhao’s take on Buffy the Vampire Slayer over other proposals she had previously encountered. “Every pitch I received seemed like, ‘Let’s just redo Buffy.’ But why?” she expressed. “However, the enthusiasm that [Zhao] showed towards the series and the character, as well as why Buffy is vital now — it was the first moment when I thought, ‘Ah, I see a purpose.’

Buffy the Vampire Slayer, one of television’s pioneers, was among the first series to embrace LGBTQ+ representation, earning it the title of a show for those who feel marginalized. Sarah Michelle Gellar attributes this inclusivity as a key factor in why the show has remained strong and continues to be revisited by fans, with many still hoping for a revival.

An antihero represents a type of hero for those who don’t conform to traditional norms, those who stand out from the crowd,” Gellar explained. “I aim to craft tales that resonate with such individuals – those who find solace in these narratives and seek a sense of belonging.

In a new take on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”, Chloé Zhao takes charge as director and assumes an executive producer role. The writing duo of Nora and Lilla Zuckerman, known for “Poker Face”, are responsible for the script and serve as showrunners. Sarah Michelle Gellar makes a special appearance and also participates as an executive producer, joining original series producers Gail Berman, Fran Kuzui, Kaz Kuzui, and Dolly Parton under Sandollar Entertainment in a behind-the-scenes capacity.

For years, I’ve taken your requests to revisit the world of Buffy seriously, but I needed assurance that we could do it justice… And now, this is being done with you in mind,” Gellar shared when speaking to Buffy fans on social media.
