The upcoming Hulu revival of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” has disclosed its initial significant character specifics, with TV Line exclusively announcing that the new Slayer will be a thoughtful 16-year-old currently named Nova, though it seems this is a temporary name. This intellectually inclined protagonist is portrayed as “bright and somewhat of a loner” who “leans more towards Willow than Buffy,” indicating a substantial deviation from Sarah Michelle Gellar’s original vampire-hunting cheerleader character. The report confirms that Gellar will appear primarily as a recurring guest star instead of the main character, with the series concentrating on “the next phase in the Buffyverse.” Nova won’t be battling alone, as the report also provides details about her support group – essentially this generation’s Scoobies – which comprises Hugo, an openly gay nerd from a wealthy background, and Gracie, a young vampire expert who admires Gellar’s Buffy. Auditions are ongoing for all three roles as the Buffy revival moves closer to securing an official pilot order from the streaming service.
The resurgence of this project is gathering a remarkable group of creative minds behind the scenes. Notably, Academy Award-winning director Chloé Zhao (of ‘Nomadland’ and ‘Eternals’) has been signed on to direct the pilot and serve as an executive producer. Writing duo Nora and Lilla Zuckerman, recognized for their work on shows like ‘Poker Face’, are set to write the scripts and act as showrunners. In addition, Sarah Michelle Gellar’s role in this project goes beyond her on-screen presence, as she’s also come aboard as an executive producer, joining forces with original series producers Gail Berman, Fran Kuzui, Kaz Kuzui, and Dolly Parton through Sandollar Entertainment. In a recent Instagram post addressing fans, Gellar expressed her dedication to preserving the legacy of the original series: “I’ve always listened to the fans and understood your desire to revisit ‘Buffy’ and her world, but I couldn’t do it unless we got it right… This is for you.
The project seems to be advancing rapidly, as Gellar has shared that the necessary offices have been set up and things are progressing quicker than she initially expected. However, she urged fans to stay patient, noting that the revival requires careful handling: “For it to turn out as it should, everyone needs to be patient with us, because this isn’t something that can happen quickly.” Gellar also praised the creative team, calling them exceptional, mentioning her daily awe in the presence of Gail Berman, the Zuckermans, and Chloé Zhao.
Everything We Know So Far About the Buffy Revival
The revival of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” marks the first successful endeavor to carry on the supernatural series since its ending in 2003, as earlier attempts did not come to fruition. What sets this latest version apart is Sarah Michelle Gellar’s active involvement, an aspect that was absent from past reboot efforts. Additionally, several original cast members have shown interest in reprising their roles within the Buffyverse alongside Gellar.
Seth Green, known for his role as the werewolf musician Oz, expressed enthusiasm about potentially continuing the story, saying, “I adore this character, and if there’s more story to share, I’d be thrilled to be a part of it.” Green mentioned Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Sarah Gellar’s involvement as comforting, explaining, “The advantage of Sarah being deeply involved in the revival is that she’s extremely protective, not just about the quality of the work but also how people feel about it.” Similarly, James Marsters, who played vampire Spike, voiced excitement during an Instagram live session about exploring more of Buffy Summers’ journey, stating, “I’m really looking forward to learning more about Buffy’s journey in saving the world because I believe the world needs her.” Charisma Carpenter, who portrayed Cordelia Chase, also hinted at a possible return during an Indiana Comic Con panel, saying, “It would be quite symbolic to be asked back, especially considering those who were part of the original cast.
Hulu hasn’t given any details about when the new season of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” might start filming or be released. However, you can still watch the original series on Hulu.
