Buffy's Back! Sarah Michelle Gellar to Reprise Role in Hulu Reboot

Sarah Michelle Gellar is back to slay another day.

Nearly two decades since “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” ended, it appears the original actress is close to returning to her legendary character, Buffy Summers, in a new take of the popular show on Hulu, according to TopMob News.

The upcoming, currently unnamed TV series is generating buzz as “the next installment in the Buffyverse,” produced by 20th Television and Searchlight TV.

In the upcoming sequel series, the first episode is slated to be helmed by Academy Award-winning director Chloe Zhao. On the other hand, Joss Whedon, the original creator of Buffy, is not expected to contribute to the project due to misconduct claims that emerged in 2021. According to various sources, he did not respond to TopMob News’ request for comment regarding this matter.

TopMob News has reached out to Hulu and 20^th Television, as well as a rep for Whedon, for comment.

Before the news about the reboot became public, Sarah, aged 47, seemed to subtly suggest it without revealing too much. In a nod to the teen drama that ran from 1997 to 2003, she posted an Instagram photo on February 2nd wearing sushi-themed pajamas similar to those she wore in a season four episode of the show. The only caption accompanying the image was a sushi emoji.

Sarah might be preparing for another venture into the supernatural world, but there’s a specific role she won’t resurrect: Sarah’s portrayal of Helen Shivers from the I Know What You Did Last Summer series. Even though her husband, Freddie Prinze Jr., is slated to appear in a new installment due for release in July, Helen Shivers won’t be making a comeback since she was “dead” according to Sarah herself when speaking with People magazine.

However, this doesn’t imply that she didn’t contribute to the project; instead, she elaborated on her role, which has been somewhat peripheral during the project’s development process.

Sarah shared, “Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, my closest friend, is in charge of this project. We often laugh because I seem to have an informal role, serving as the continuity check. So, I’m always reminding her about what would or wouldn’t fit with these characters. In essence, I can be considered the unofficial Continuity Supervisor.
