On Saturday, Bungie, renowned for creating first-person shooter games, officially revealed the gameplay mechanics of their upcoming title Marathon. This sneak peek offered a comprehensive insight into their forthcoming project, marking it as their latest major production since Destiny 2 in 2017.
As the week progressed towards Saturday, the studio organized an engaging alternate reality game (ARG), providing hints about Marathon. These included glimpses of fresh tunes and character illustrations. This eventually culminated in a robot being operated by players, who explored the Bungie office on the morning of the unveiling.

In this game, the playable characters, referred to as Runners, engage in intense team battles involving three members, utilizing sophisticated weapons and gear. Throughout the game, a cryptic voice forebodes an impending demise for all.
Six distinct Runner characters are available for players to select, each embodying unique roles with exceptional skills. Out of these six, four have been unveiled: Locus, Blackbird, Glitch, and Void.
In simpler terms, a marathon game functions as a search-and-escape shooter. Essentially, you’re tasked with discovering valuable items while avoiding getting eliminated. The total number of players in each game can differ depending on the specific map.
Marathon serves as both a revamp and a continuation, developed as an innovative retelling and follow-up to Bungie’s initial series of games known by the same name. The announcement for Marathon came during the PlayStation Games Showcase held in 2023.
Though Bungie was bought by Sony’s parent company in 2022, it continues to develop games for multiple platforms and maintains its independence within Sony’s PlayStation Studios. Marathon is a significant title for Bungie, which has experienced several rounds of layoffs recently.
Fans can mark their calendars for September 23, 2025, as Marathon will officially be available to play then. The game is planned for release on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, and PlayStation 5 platforms.
For those eager to start playing earlier, an exclusive alpha test is scheduled for April 23, but please note that it will only be accessible within North America.
