Bungie has officially unveiled that Marathon, their sci-fi multiplayer extraction shooter and modern revival of the 1994 original, is set to debut on September 23, 2025. This announcement was made in conjunction with the release of the game’s first full trailer, which highlights intense, rapid-fire combat in an awe-inspiring science fiction universe.
In the game, a colossal derelict vessel floating around Tau Ceti IV – often referred to as a “ghost ship” – serves as the backdrop for an enigmatic setting. Players take on the personas of Runners, high-tech mercenaries, who infiltrate the deserted colony to snatch valuable relics and endure hazardous confrontations with rival teams.
Key Features Revealed:
-
Gameplay of PvP Extraction: Imagine a blend of Escape from Tarkov and Destiny, but with quicker movement and vibrant, artistic aesthetics.
-
Crossplay and Cross-Save: Fully supported across all platforms at launch.
-
Alpha Access is Now Active: Gamers are invited to sign up for the closed alpha testing phase by joining Bungie’s Discord. The access is compatible with PS5, Xbox, and personal computer platforms.
-
Emergent Storytelling: Bungie hints at player-driven narratives and evolving world states.
In essence, this reboot of the original Marathon trilogy is a faithful continuation that preserves its core elements while giving them a fresh, contemporary look suitable for today’s action shooter genre. Since Bungie is now owned by Sony, yet the game will be available on day one for Xbox, Marathon also demonstrates an effective multiplatform approach in the ongoing console competition of this generation.
