Over the Easter break, I spent quite some time on Call of Duty. Additionally, an article about Black Ops 6 piqued my interest and got me thinking.
In Dexerto’s recent post, the focus was on the growing discontent among players regarding the excessive number of cannabis-themed skins. Even though we aren’t obligated to purchase these premium items, as they are not included in the battle pass, I can understand their frustration.
However, delving deeper into this topic, there’s an obvious disparity on one side of the balance scale. Since the release of Black Ops 6, there has been a great deal of discussion about chat bans, as it appears that the AI systems are struggling to catch up and adapt effectively.
You must refrain from using profanity or writing content that Activision considers offensive, regardless of whether it involves curse words or not. However, references to marijuana accessories are acceptable.
Playing to the audience, but not everyone has to like it
As a devoted fan, I can tell you that the continual creation of these skins boils down to one straightforward fact: they’re selling. However, just because they’re being bought doesn’t necessarily mean everyone adores them. For instance, this Reddit thread raises an intriguing query.
Of course, it’s worth noting that just because someone enjoys playing Call of Duty doesn’t automatically mean they’re a stoner. However, I do appreciate the humor in Jay and Silent Bob.
My personal viewpoint is this: It’s acceptable for games to feature skins associated with substances that are prohibited in various regions, like the United Kingdom where I reside. However, the inclusion of the term “balls” in game chat is considered inappropriate.
For instance, if you accused someone of cheating and said they were “playing with an overabundance of skill,” that statement would be acceptable. However, if you compensate Activision financially, you can enjoy any desired game enhancements.
I received a short-term ban from chatting due to using some strong language, and I absolutely don’t advocate for abusive or disrespectful communication in either voice or text conversations. However, I can’t help but feel a sense of inconsistency about this situation.
An adult game for adults

The game “Call of Duty” carries an 18 rating, making it suitable only for mature audiences. Therefore, while the concept of “weed skins” may not inherently be problematic, considering that minors should not be engaging with this content, it seems reasonable to avoid such elements in relation to this game.
Just as chats are monitored and filtered for inappropriate content, is it necessary to have a strict filter for profanity given that it’s adults who are participating? Or, considering the adult nature of the game, is it essential to have a thorough profanity filter?
Let me put it this way: It’s common knowledge that children often engage in playing Call of Duty. Be it you or I, even the creators at Activision are aware of it. In fact, we’ve all had our fair share of interactions in game chats with youngsters expressing themselves rather bluntly.
It seems that as long as it generates revenue for Activision, they’re content with including a significant amount of stoner content, but maintaining a strict policy against profanity in chats. One might wonder if there isn’t a better balance to strike, considering the potential impact on younger players.
I may be intentionally over-exaggerating for emphasis, but let me clarify: The “stoner” skin designs don’t interest me; I won’t purchase them. My frustration arises when these humorous skins appear in my killcams, making them seem out of place and absurd.
currently, Call of Duty is experiencing a stark dichotomy regarding ‘mature conduct.’ It appears acceptable if they’re receiving our money. Couldn’t we reclaim the classic, cherished Call of Duty we once adored?
