As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I’ve witnessed the evolution of video games from simple pixelated adventures to immersive, cinematic experiences like Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Zombies. The recent developments surrounding the recasting of actors have left me both intrigued and a tad concerned.
In the midst of this zombie-infested world, even us gamers know that safety is paramount. It’s no shocker for those who’ve been following Activision’s artificial intelligence advancements closely. Seems like there’s been a change in the cast for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Zombies, as hinted by a representative from the company. This news follows whispers that many voice actors associated with Black Ops 6 Zombies have stepped away from the game due to concerns about insufficient protection against AI – an issue that’s been making waves lately within the gaming community.
In a current piece published by Game Developer magazine, an Activision representative has expressed, “We value the autonomy of these artists. To maintain fairness for everyone involved, we won’t offer additional remarks concerning our ongoing negotiations with SAG-AFTRA at this time. We eagerly anticipate a resolution that benefits all parties as soon as it can be achieved.” It is noteworthy to mention that this recasting occurred following the SAG-AFTRA strike in July, which primarily focused on establishing safeguards for members against AI roles.
Since the latest updates for Black Ops 6 were released, players have been puzzled by the voice actors’ absence, observing that recurring characters like William Peck and Samatha Maxis seem to have changed voices. At the game’s launch, Zeke Alton and Julie Nathanson were associated with their roles, but Alton is conspicuously missing from the credits. Regarding Nathanson and several other credited actors, their names are not linked to their characters, such as how Samatha Maxis is identified in the game as an AI character named S.A.M. instead.
As a gamer, I noticed a significant change in the voice acting of Peck from the Black Ops 6 trailer back in August, well before its release, compared to his in-game appearance in November. Luckily, the game developers were able to reach out to actor Zeke Alton for reprising the role of Peck. He shared that:
As far as I’m aware, I didn’t give that performance… It’s their role and they can decide how to handle it. However, I’m focused on maintaining my reputation as an artist. Some fans of the game have contacted me because the failure to credit the replacement actor might lead people to believe it’s still me, which doesn’t accurately reflect my skills as a performer.
The voice actors for Activision’s games encountered some complex issues due to the conditions around the recent SAG-AFTRA strike. Since Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 was already in development before the strike, it doesn’t violate the Interactive Media Agreement. However, it’s unclear how Activision plans to address the strike, as there are indications that the voice actors may have been given temporary contracts to resume their roles.
