Call the Midwife reveals update on Trixie and Matthew – and when she’ll return again

As a long-time fan of Call the Midwife, I must say that Season 13 has been nothing short of a rollercoaster ride for Trixie and Matthew. Having followed their journey since the beginning, it’s heartbreaking to see them struggle financially, which undeniably put a strain on their relationship.

Season 13 of Call the Midwife proved to be especially challenging for Trixie and Matthew.

In simpler terms, he no longer holds a position on the board of Aylward Estates, the business passed down to him by his deceased father, due to amassing debts exceeding a quarter of a million pounds.

As he frantically sought a solution, they found themselves struggling to make ends meet with Trixie’s midwife income, a financial burden that increasingly tested their bond and pushed their relationship to the verge of breaking point.

But eventually, an opportunity presented itself.

Matt’s buddy presented him with an opportunity that could significantly improve his current financial situation, which Matt eagerly accepted.

But there was a sizeable catch: it required him to move to New York.

Indeed, he performed that exact action during the Season 13 finale, accompanied by his son Jonty, leaving Trixie behind in London.

At first, the midwife chose to stay behind, but as her psychological wellbeing started to decline significantly, spurred on by her brother’s encouragement, she made the daring decision to accompany them to New York City, which was her intended destination.

This holiday season’s special episode revealed that she had, in fact, moved to America and has resided there since then.

Following a brief vacation basking in the sunlight of Portofino before Christmas, Trixie opted to drop into Poplar for a quick stopover to reconnect with her friends and work associates.

However, due to a freeze-up in the fog and labor strikes causing flight cancellations, her visit lasted longer than planned.

She hoped to be back “home” with her boys by “bedtime on Boxing Day”.

However, when Sister Julienne observed that Trixie referred to “home” as England, she clarified: “Your actual home will not be England for another year or two. Despite the prosperity of our venture, it has become somewhat of an obstacle.

Sister Julienne also asked Trixie if she intended to resume her role as a midwife.

As for now, Trixie and Matthew are enjoying their time in New York, but they don’t plan on living there long-term, as per the latest news. Additionally, Trixie remains committed to pursuing her career as a midwife.

But it remains entirely unclear if we will see Matthew again.

Should he truly be gone, it leaves us pondering what implications this might hold for Trixie’s marriage, as well as her ongoing role in the series.
