Actress Ella Bruccoleri, known for her role in Call the Midwife, is set to take on the lead part in the upcoming BBC historical series titled “The Other Bennet Sister.
Drawing inspiration from Jane Austen’s classic novel “Pride and Prejudice,” this tale reimagines the narrative, placing special focus on the frequently underestimated character of Mary Bennet, who takes center stage in this adaptation by Janice Hadlow.
In Jane Austen’s novel, the main character is Elizabeth, Jane Austen’s older sister, while Mary is often portrayed as somewhat socially uneasy and playing a minor role. In contrast, Hadlow’s affectionate tribute to Austen envisions a more dynamic journey for Mary.
As a passionate cinephile, I can’t help but share my excitement about Sarah Quintrell, the screenwriter known for “The Power,” adapting another captivating story for the big screen. It’s been announced that Heidi Anne-Bruccoleri, who played Sister Frances in seasons 8-12 of “Call the Midwife,” is the first major casting for this project. I simply can’t wait to see her bring her unique talent to life on the silver screen!
This series chronicles Mary’s journey as she breaks free from her sisters’ shadows, seeking self-discovery and purpose. In the process, she finds herself entwined in a grand love tale.
Her travels will take her away from her family’s house in Meryton, leading to the grand social events of Regency London and the scenic highlands and lowlands of the Lake District. This adventure is driven by her quest for freedom, self-discovery, and personal transformation.
Bruccoleri stated: “Being someone who has always found a stronger connection with Mary compared to Elizabeth, and this bond deepened further after reading Janice Hadlow’s exceptional book – I feel incredibly fortunate to be delving deeper into her world over the coming months, as imagined by these remarkable authors.
Sarah Quintrell’s scripts brim with intricate, unique details, compassion, wit, and an abundance of warmth. They subtly unveil that beneath Mary’s reserved demeanor and stiffness, there dwells a woman yearning for meaning and companionship.

In her own words, producer Jane Tranter deemed Bruccoleri as an ideal fit for the role of Mary. On the other hand, the original author, Hadlow, expressed great joy and approval regarding the casting choice.
In a statement, Tranter said: “Mary’s path shifts her from being underestimated to indelible, and I am confident that Ella will skillfully portray every nuance of that metamorphosis with humor, elegance, and profound emotion. We are delighted to have her central to the narrative.
In the United Kingdom, BBC One and iPlayer, along with BritBox in the USA and Canada, are set to air “The Other Bennet Sister” at a yet-to-be-determined date or time frame.
