Call the Midwife teases Nancy exit – but Megan Cusack is tight-lipped on future

In the final episode of Call the Midwife‘s twelfth season, viewers experienced a moment of concern as it seemed like Nancy might be departing from Nonnatus House.

In the city, the midwife had been unable to find suitable housing for herself and her daughter Colette alongside her work. However, she was presented with an opportunity for a new job in the countryside, complete with a house large enough to accommodate them both.

However, during the 2023 Christmas special, it was revealed that Nancy decided to remain where she was, as Sister Julienne generously provided accommodations not only for Nancy but also for Collette.

She mentioned, “This appeared to be the most logical living solution,” as they toured their potential new residence together.

“One can only marvel that it was not thought of sooner,” added Sister Monica Joan. Amen to that.

Nancy, who found herself engaged to a pharmaceutical salesman named Roger following a fast-paced relationship, has recently been offered a job from 18 months ago. This position comes with a charming little house that perfectly coincides with her plans to reside with her husband once they get married.

“Are you going to miss us?” asked Colette after Nancy broke the news.

Sister Julienne expressed that while we are saddened by your leaving, our joy for the two of you outshines that sadness,” she stated.

“I can’t put it as elegantly as that, but good on you, lass,” added Nurse Crane.

Later on, with tears in her eyes, Nancy shared the news with her fellow residents of Nonnatus House: The wedding, initially uncertain because of objections from Roger’s mom, Esther, will happen in Poplar in half a year.

However, although it seems a Nancy exit could be imminent, Megan Cusack declined to verify or dispute her future role.

While there are indications that Nancy might be leaving, Megan Cusack remained tight-lipped about her potential departure.

“I found it delightful [to delve into everything]. I never imagined Nancy would embark on a romantic journey, so this aspect adds depth to her character. It’s been charming because it seems as though the town of Poplar has given her the confidence to lower her defenses and embrace being loved.”

This version maintains the original meaning while using more natural and conversational language to make it easier for readers to understand and engage with the text.

Cusack also took the opportunity to empathise with Roger’s mother following her initial pushback.

“There is religious and political background that goes into her reasoning,” she explained.

As for that period, events were continuing unabated. That rift, it remains profound to this day. It seems as though people view it as something from long ago, but we’ve only recently marked the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement. Then came Brexit, stirring up much of the tension once more.

Cusack also discussed how that division impacted her own family.

“My grandparents were Protestant and Catholic and they faced difficulties with that,” she added.

It’s heartening to note that she eventually joins us, as this unity among individuals was instrumental in moving Ireland towards greater stability.
