Call the Midwife’s Nancy swept off her feet as romance deepens

As a seasoned moviegoer with a heart that leans towards tales of love and redemption, I must say that the Call the Midwife Christmas special has once again managed to tug at my emotional strings, this time with the blossoming romance between Nancy and Roger.

This year’s Call the Midwife holiday special, marking a historical first with two episodes, saw Nancy experiencing romantic feelings.

Initially, the midwife met Roger when she was temporarily filling in at the reception during Miss Higgins’ absence.

Initially captivated by each other, the tranquilizer representative and Nancy, whom he met at Dr. Turner’s clinic, felt an immediate attraction towards one another. The feeling was mutual.

And their instantaneous chemistry continued to flourish.

On another occasion, Roger went back to the clinic in hopes of seeing the doctor again. Although it appeared his appointment was cancelled, he lingered about, eventually mustering up the courage to formally invite Nancy out on a date.

She mentioned that things were quite hectic due to the holiday season being Christmas,” she expressed, although it was evident that she was tempted by his proposal.

“You know what it’s like,” added Nancy.

That very evening, while attending the town fair with her daughter Francesca and some work companions, she shared with Rosalind that there were instances when she felt an overwhelming sense of their true isolation. This stark revelation seemed to inspire her to seize the opportunity provided by Roger’s invitation.

Nancy confronted her apprehension nonetheless, and, as expected, their outing turned out to be an overwhelming triumph…almost.

Following their fun spin on the bumper cars, the duo decided to take a leisurely walk and continued their conversation. Later on, Roger hinted at wanting to give her a kiss, which she signaled was acceptable.

After such a wonderful moment, Nancy expressed her delight by saying, “That was beautiful,” but Roger’s joy was quickly dampened as he tripped and twisted his ankle unexpectedly.

But that minor hiccup wasn’t enough to wipe the gigantic smiles off either of their faces.

The next morning, however, their romance was almost halted before it had even really begun.

Unexpectedly, Roger showed up at Nonnatus House carrying a bouquet intended for Nancy. However, upon arrival, he was met not by Nancy herself but by her daughter – an detail about their relationship Roger wasn’t yet privy to.

But despite her best efforts to shut the salesman out, the gentlemen was not for turning and managed to coax her into joining him for a cup of tea, where she opened up to him about her past.

She joked, “Cleaning up vomit amuses me,” she said. “Being ineffective on the bumper cars brings laughter. Even sharing tales of the orphanage and imitating the nuns’ voices, I could find a way to make it humorous.

Becoming a mom at 16 has been the most significant and weighty experience of my life – it’s something too profound for jokes. That’s why I didn’t share it with you.

When Nancy confessed her fear that he might distance himself because she’s a mom, he gave an excellent reply.

What would make me uncomfortable is if you want me to constantly laugh, as that wouldn’t feel authentic or genuine,” he expressed, adding, “I prefer for it to be real, Nancy.

Everything I’ve experienced since the moment I first saw you has felt like a dream.

When Nancy questioned whether everything seemed to be progressing rather swiftly, he had a fitting reply ready as well.

“Yes, but I think it’s meant to,” he said.

With Nancy on board, it was now ready for Roger to encounter Francesca for the first time at last, as they all gathered together for the traditional Nonnatus House Christmas meal, which included both mom and daughter.

After an initial blip, it’s full steam ahead for Nancy and her new beau.
