In my humble opinion, as I delve into the latest instalment of Call the Midwife, it seems that the blossoming relationship between Rosalind and Cyril appears to be facing a roadblock. A spark ignited during the Christmas special, but now their romantic journey seems to have hit a snag.
Tonight’s episode (on Sunday, 12th January) featured a heart-touching moment where the midwife and he decided to lend a hand together at a homeless shelter, an intense setting that tested the strength of their bond.
In the course of events, Rosalind grew fond of an individual named Ted. At first, Ted had been asked to leave the shelter following a physical altercation with another inhabitant.
After getting to know him better through their chat, where she discovered his background as a window dresser at Harrods and details about his family, Rosalind found herself moved to aid Ted. She then asked if he’d be willing to lend a hand with the preparations for the upcoming Flower Festival.
Indeed, I couldn’t help but feel elated when he agreed to my proposal, yet Cyril swiftly dampened my anticipation.
“This won’t change his life,” he said.
But Rosalind took offence at his comment.
“Did I say I thought it might?” she snapped.
Later on, Cyril shared with Rosalind that he didn’t want her to feel “let down” should Ted not be able to make a commitment, yet she remained somewhat agitated.
In response, I assured them, “It seems like you might be implying that I’m engaging in this for my own comfort, but honestly, that’s far from the truth.
Her enthusiasm was eventually extinguished, however, when Ted disappeared.
She told Cyril, “You were correct.” Admitting that I derived pleasure from thinking I was aiding him, I now realize how presumptuous and self-centered I was.
However, Cyril successfully altered her spirits, and subsequently, in another scene, they were seen laughing and playfully arranging flowers side by side. At one point, their hands accidentally touched, followed by a lingering glance filled with longing as their eyes met.
Indeed, Cyril remains married to Lucille. In the twelfth season, she departed for Jamaica after experiencing a miscarriage and an increase in anti-immigrant sentiments.
Apart from feeling deeply saddened about not attending her sister’s wedding, this incident prompted her to spend some quality time with her loved ones.
However, soon after her return to the Caribbean for what seemed like a brief visit, Lucille found employment at a maternity ward and has stayed there continuously. This situation suggested that their marriage might be coming to an end.
Despite their marriage remaining unbroken, a chat with Mrs. Wallace underscored the importance of maintaining a relationship, regardless of distance. In light of this, Cyril made up his mind to gather his belongings and prepare for the journey ahead.
It’s been a while since we last met,” he admitted to Rosalind, following his hesitation to cancel their scheduled trip to the Flower Festival. “Sometimes, the sea seems vast.
However, as the midwife gave him comforting words and boosted his spirits, she fought back tears upon receiving a kiss and moving to step away from Cyril, leaving visible traces of emotion in the form of tears on her cheeks.
Is it more likely that Cyril will choose to remain in Jamaica with Lucille, focusing on saving their marriage, or could he opt to part ways with her, potentially keeping the possibility of being with Rosalind alive?
Call the Midwife season 14 continues on Sunday 19th January on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
