Call the Midwife’s Trixie takes on important new role as Nonnatus House fights for its future

Among the thoughts swirling in the minds of many “Call the Midwife” enthusiasts as they approach season 14, a major curiosity arises: How will Trixie and Matthew’s story unfold?

Last season, the businessman traveled to New York due to financial difficulties, seeking a fresh opportunity that might turn around his current string of poor outcomes.

After considering carefully and with a moment of uncertainty, the midwife decided to travel there to be with him. Since then, they’ve been residing in that place, with plans to carry on living there temporarily, as was hinted at during this year’s Christmas episode.

Trixie shared with Sister Julienne that she wouldn’t be in England for about a year yet, as her work was thriving but causing some inconvenience.

Trixie also said that she intended to resume her role as a midwife.

However, during the episode on Sunday evening (5th January), Sister Julienne mentioned that she would require Trixie to take on additional responsibilities, in addition to her midwife tasks.

She declared, “The Board of Health is taking a hostile stance towards Nonnatus House. It seems they take issue with the fact that the Order there are religious sisters by nature. They object to our traditional clothing and our practice of prayer. They disapprove of us providing counsel on contraceptives, sex education, or perhaps even babies.

“And they do not like that our first obedience is to God and not to them.”

When Trixie inquired about their course of action, Sister Julienne responded candidly, “We’ll respond forcefully using all the resources we have available.

“And that, my colleague and friend, includes you.”

However, just like last season when Trixie pleaded with Matthew to manage his deteriorating financial situation, she demonstrated her ability to take charge. Later in the same episode, we noticed that Trixie smoothly assumed her new responsibilities as the midwife.

Following a discussion with Nurse Crane on the risks of emotional attachment and emphasizing practical data for influencing decision-makers, she engages in an open dialogue with Sister Julienne during their audit of the Nonnatus House finances.

She pointed out that it’s evident the council’s budget functions effectively due to the fact that the Order is doing an enormous amount of work without receiving any payment for it.

However, while Sister Julienne presented her case advocating for their charitable endeavors, Trixie persisted in highlighting the importance of transformation.

or more casually:

Though Sister Julienne spoke up for their charity work, Trixie kept pushing for change.

Before the establishment of National Health, that was how things were,” she explained. “However, there’s no logical reason for it to persist after that point.

“The council are using you so that they can save money.”

Sister Julienne appeared perturbed.

“Is this going to be awfully contentious?” she asked.

“Yes, it is,” said Trixie without an ounce of hesitation.

As a passionate moviegoer, I’m thrilled to share that, after some tumultuous times, Trixie appears to be firmly rooted in place. And let me tell you, she’s more than ready to take on any challenges that come her way!
