In the second-to-last episode of Call the Midwife’s fourteenth season, there was much joy as May was formally adopted by Shelagh and Patrick Turner.
The girl arrived in Britain through the Hong Kong Adoption Program (operational between 1960 and 1963), as Esther Tang, her biological mother, found herself unable to provide proper care for her. Originally, it was another family who were meant to adopt her.
In her adoptive father’s sickness, it was the Turners who opened their house and affection to May, leaving an immediate, radiant impact upon them.
Even though there were several obstacles along the way, such as the serious concern about her potentially being taken away from Shelagh and Patrick last season due to her near-drowning incident, it’s clear now that my position as a Turner is beyond question.
The announcement was made that Esther, a resident of Hong Kong, has now finalized the legal agreement for her adoption.
“Are you happy about that?” he asked May.
“I’ve been happy for a long time, just knowing it will happen,” she smiled.
Upon receiving the long-awaited confirmation, Shelagh and Patrick joyfully hugged their radiantly smiling daughter.
Prior to the Christmas episode last year, Stephen McGann hinted at some “highs and lows” for the Turner family in their upcoming storyline, as life often goes, but assured us of a “more stable” journey ahead.
Additionally, he mentioned that it’s “quite pleasant” for him and Laura Main, given that the actors portraying their on-screen children have grown up a bit.
“We can get more done with them dramatically,” he added.
“I just want everything to be OK,” she said. “I really, really do.
I truly cherish those kids and the actors I work with; they’re an exceptional team. I can’t help but hope that they appreciate my feelings in return.
However, though they had been constantly worried that external factors might separate May from them during her foster care period, it’s clear now that she has firmly become a cherished member of their family.
