Callum Woodhouse on returning to All Creatures and upcoming Breaking Bad-style episode

As a dedicated fan of All Creatures Great and Small, I eagerly await the return of Callum Woodhouse‘s charming character, Tristan Farnon. His unique blend of wit, charm, and veterinary prowess always leaves me spellbound.

After a long wait, the much-anticipated new season of All Creatures Great and Small is finally back on our screens, and one character in particular that fans are eager to see again is Tristan Farnon, portrayed by Callum Woodhouse.

Previously featured on Channel 5’s series exiting to join the Royal Army Veterinary Corps, Woodhouse is expected to make a warm comeback within the circle of All Creatures again.

In my own words, I shared some insights with TopMob magazine during our chat about how I unwind, expressing my unabashed fondness for Star Wars and vocalizing my less-than-impressed opinion on Bridgerton, which I believe doesn’t quite hit the mark for me.

Additionally, he hints at some upcoming episodes in the current season of All Creatures, one of which shares notable resemblances with the popular Netflix show, Breaking Bad.

What is the view from your sofa?

Beneath the television, there are bookshelves on both sides. On one side, you’ll find graphic novels separated from regular novels by a Marvel figurine featuring Dr. Doom seated on a throne. The other side holds a record player and a DVD of Dexys Midnight Runners’ concert at the Duke of York’s Theatre – my favorite band. In front of it, there’s Tristan’s veterinary bag from All Creatures Great and Small.

Who controls the remote in your household?

I’m the one in charge of controlling our entertainment system, as I have three different remotes – one each for the TV, Firestick, and soundbar. Sometimes my girlfriend asks me to handle it more quickly, but by that point, I’ve already decided on our viewing option.

What have you enjoyed recently?

The Acolyte. It didn’t do very well in reviews, but I love anything Star Wars. You put on eight hours of paint drying in the Star Wars universe and I’d watch.

If even paint drying is watchable, what are your TV turn-offs?

In my perspective, there are certain productions that don’t resonate with me as much. For instance, Bridgerton isn’t really my cup of tea, yet if the opportunity arose for me to be part of that show, I wouldn’t hesitate. The appeal lies in the freedom it offers – the ability to select any role or job within its scope.

Have you ever auditioned for Star Wars?

No, that’s my dream. If I got to wield a lightsaber on TV or film, I could die the next day a happy man.

Were your parents supportive when you told them you wanted to act?

As a child of an engineer in the oil industry and a dedicated nurse, I dared to express my aspirations, leaving everyone around me slightly puzzled yet unwaveringly supportive. My father, ever the pragmatist, urged me to maintain a backup plan, but I was determined that if acting wasn’t successful, it simply wouldn’t be.

After graduating from drama school, did you jump directly into The Durrells and later land a role in All Creatures? Given your career trajectory, it seems you’ve had a longstanding affection for animals.

In a surprising turn of events, I found myself playing complex characters like Hotspur in Henry IV and Stanhope in Journey’s End at drama school. Then came along Leslie in The Durrells, which I wasn’t expecting! I had hoped to perform it well and return to my usual villainous roles. However, I’ve continued with the family-friendly, heartwarming drama instead. On the side, I’ve also ventured into horror films – a genre I adore.

This season Tristan is back from the war. How was his homecoming?

In the finale of season three, Siegfried (Samuel West) and Tristan shared a heartfelt goodbye, making you think their bond would evolve, but surprisingly, they soon reverted to squabbling like an aging married couple again – which is delightful for viewers. I adored Jamie Rose’s portrayal of Carmody in season four, so it’s been fantastic working alongside him. Our upcoming episode is quite captivating, reminiscent of Breaking Bad.

Breaking Bad is quite a departure from the Yorkshire Dales!

Essentially, it’s still the charm of James Herriot that captivates us. When we shoot in Grassington, standing in for Darrowby, the love for the series is palpable – we always have spectators during filming. It feels akin to both television and theatre. With around 200 people watching, when we wrap up a scene, applause fills the air.

Are you working on something darker right now?

Instead of acting full-time, I’ve taken up part-time gardening as a hobby to fill my days with structure during breaks from acting jobs. A mutual acquaintance was managing my garden while I was preparing for a horror film where I had to appear emaciated. To help me lose weight, I lent a hand with the gardening. It turned out that I had a knack for it, and he offered me some shifts. Now I spend less time indoors, learn about plants, and do enjoyable tasks. In the end, my father’s wish came true as I have found an alternative career path, providing me with a Plan B.
