In issue #18 of Wonder Woman, the battle against the Sovereign escalates even further. Ever since the current series by Tom King and Daniel Sampere started, Wonder Woman has been engaged in a fierce fight with the hidden ruler of America. This installment promises to be particularly thrilling for fans of the somewhat controversial Wonder Woman series, as Wonder Woman takes her anger directly to the Sovereign, seeking vengeance. She clashes with Sarge Steel, thwarting his scheme to assassinate kidnapped Amazons in collaboration with the Justice League, and then rips off his hand, replicating their prior encounter. However, her next obstacle is a throwback for DC comics enthusiasts and a character strikingly similar to Captain America: General Glory.

View Urgent ForecastGeneral Glory is a captivating figure within the DC Comics universe, displaying strong similarities to Captain America but offering a distinct twist due to his unique powers. Both characters embody the trope of patriotic defenders, who gain abilities to safeguard their homeland during WWII, yet General Glory’s power source sets him apart. Exploring his background will help determine if he could potentially best Wonder Woman in combat.
Despite Having Powers, General Glory Is the Good Value Brand Captain America
Initially introduced in issue #46 of “Justice League America”, the character known as General Glory was once Joseph Jones, a soldier who received extraordinary abilities from Lady Liberty upon uttering the words, “Lady of Liberty, heed my plea — For the land of the brave and home of the free.” He then combated the Nazis in a manner reminiscent of Captain America. However, unlike his counterpart, Jones didn’t get frozen on an Arctic mission; instead, he resurfaced in America with no recollection of his past. He was manipulated by his handler, Agent Newkirk Sharp, who administered drugs and assigned him a new identity. Years later, Jones regained his memory and became part of the Justice League, following a casual encounter with Guy Gardner and a “General Glory” comic book. During his tenure with the League, he undertook various missions. However, upon transforming into an older version of himself, he suffered a heart attack, which ultimately led to the emergence of the second General Glory.
At the hospital, Jones encountered Donovan Wallace, a young man they shared a room with. They formed a connection, and Jones reminisced about his past exploits to Wallace. Gradually, Wallace developed faith in General Glory’s power, eventually gaining access to it himself. In memory of their bond, Wallace aspired to become the next General Glory. Unfortunately, Jones passed away not long after. During his tenure as General Glory, Wallace’s accomplishments were unimpressive, and ultimately he and his family fell victim to a ruthless group called the Fourth Reich – a Neo-Nazi faction. Now, the mantle of General Glory has been passed on to someone new, who likely possesses the traditional powers such as enhanced strength and durability. So, it’s debatable whether this new incarnation of General Glory could hold their own against Wonder Woman.
Wonder Woman Completely Overpowers General Glory
General Glory may possess superpowers, but he’s never been portrayed as powerful in any iteration. The latest version discovers this the hard way when he underestimates Wonder Woman’s might. After hitting her on the head with a flag, causing momentary disorientation, she easily took the flag from him and delivered a punch that knocked him unconscious. General Glory fell like a bag of potatoes, while Wonder Woman resumed her stroll towards the White House.
I find myself intrigued by General Glory’s comeback. Being a relatively new figure in the Justice League’s timeline and appearing during what seems like a quieter period for them, he doesn’t exactly enjoy widespread admiration or possess formidable powers. Yet, his unique characteristics make him an appealing addition to DC’s narratives, even if he often finds himself in challenging situations. Needless to say, he was far from enough to deter Wonder Woman’s onslaught against the Sovereign.
