Can Marvel Studios Still Bring The MCU Multiverse Saga to a Satisfying End?

As a gamer who has spent countless hours navigating through virtual worlds and saving galaxies from impending doom, I have to say that the current state of Marvel Studios’ Multiverse Saga leaves me with a sense of déjà vu. It feels like we are on the brink of another epic battle, but this time, the stakes seem higher, the timeline tighter, and the characters more scattered than ever before.

This year, Marvel Studios has significantly ramped up its efforts to reassure both fans and Disney investors that the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has a bright future ahead. After the release of Avengers: Endgame, rumors surfaced about significant issues within the MCU production, and many felt that the franchise was sacrificing quality for quantity. Additionally, real-world events such as celebrity scandals involving Jonathan Majors and Hollywood labor disputes like actors’ and writers’ strikes have required Marvel to make major adjustments in their production schedules and the overall narrative of the current MCU Multiverse Saga.

Currently, significant transformations are underway. Previously stepped down, Disney CEO Bob Iger has returned to his position; the approach towards franchises such as the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and Star Wars is shifting back to ‘quality over quantity’. Marvel Studios is experiencing considerable public relations triumphs with their sneak peeks at 2025 projects like “Captain America: Brave New World,” “Thunderbolts,” and “Daredevil: Born Again.” However, the franchise still has numerous unresolved questions as it forges ahead. One of the most pressing issues is undeniably: Will the MCU Multiverse Saga successfully pull off a recovery from its current downward trajectory?

The End Is Nigh

Can Marvel Studios Still Bring The MCU Multiverse Saga to a Satisfying End?

Let’s take a look at how much runway we have left:

The final stage of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will wrap up next year with the succession of releases including “Agatha All Along”, “Captain America: New World Order”, “Daredevil’s Rebirth”, “The Thunderbolts”, and finally, “Ironheart”.

The sixth phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will conclude the Multiverse Storyline, with a projected run from 2026 to 2027. Confirmed projects for this phase include the films “Fantastic Four: First Steps” and “Blade,” set to release in 2025. Additionally, you’ll find “Avengers: Doomsday” and the Disney+ series “Vision Quest” slated for 2026, with “Avengers: Secret Wars” expected in 2027.

There’s still some flexibility in the schedule for additional projects, such as the “Wonder Man” series on Disney+ currently in production, or various Marvel Special Presentation features. However, the timeframe between now (Fall 2024) and the summer of 2027, when the Multiverse Saga concludes, is rather narrow. Given the vast array of characters and storylines set to be introduced during MCU Phases 4 to 6, it seems challenging for the Multiverse Saga to deliver a grand, satisfying finale like “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Endgame” did, or to maintain the cohesive, interconnected narrative that characterized the Infinity Saga.

Why The Multiverse Saga Ending Will Be A FAIL

Can Marvel Studios Still Bring The MCU Multiverse Saga to a Satisfying End?

The Multiverse Saga seems to primarily bring together characters initially introduced during Phases 4 – 6, as this would often be their second or third appearance within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Unlike established franchises like Thor, Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Strange, Captain Marvel, and Spider-Man, which have undergone significant changes that haven’t been fully explored yet, we haven’t seen many projects focusing on newer characters such as Shang-Chi, Shuri/Black Panther II, or The Eternals. Meanwhile, the introduction of the Fantastic Four into the MCU will represent a fresh set of characters and mythology.

There’s some uncertainty about whether the Disney+ series and their characters are crucial or not to the grand climax of Secret Wars. It’s certain that Tom Hiddleston as Loki and Anthony Mackie as Captain America will be there, but it’s less clear if newcomers like Ms. Marvel, Moon Knight, Hawkeye, Kate Bishop, She-Hulk, Peggy Carter, or Daredevil will join in. For many dedicated fans, this would be their second time seeing these characters on screen, and for those who only watch movies and skip the TV shows, it’ll be the first time they encounter them.

…We haven’t factored in the additional effort required for Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Doctor Doom, the process of re-establishing the main villain of the Multiverse Saga (which was previously played by Jonathan Majors as Kang), and replacing him.

Will Marvel Studios conclude the Multiverse Saga by Summer 2027? That’s certainly a possibility. However, it seems that wrapping up such a complex narrative of multiple versions of characters and various timelines within this timeframe might result in a rushed ending. The overall story arc may still appear to have gaps, inconsistencies, and unresolved plot points for individual franchises. It could even seem like a desperate move towards Phase 7, resembling an escape hatch rather than another triumphant milestone.

The next MCU release will be the Agatha All Along Disney+ series on September 19th.
