Can you play Path of Exile 2 on gaming handhelds like the Steam Deck and ROG Ally?
As someone who has spent countless hours delving into the labyrinthine world of Path of Exile and navigating the treacherous waters of gaming handhelds, I must say that my excitement for playing Path of Exile 2 on these portable powerhouses is palpable.
It is possible that Path of Exile 2 might be playable on handheld devices in the future, though specific details are yet to be determined due to the game not being released as of now. The system requirements for the PC version aren’t particularly demanding and the game will offer controller support, but we haven’t had a chance to verify its performance on handhelds.
The developers have confirmed their intention to ensure compatibility with the Steam Deck, a device running on Linux instead of Windows 11.
It looks good for playing Path of Exile 2 on the ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go
Based solely on speculation at this point, it remains uncertain how well Path of Exile 2 will perform on portable devices until it undergoes proper testing.
However, looking at the PC spec requirements, all signs point to positive.
These two devices, the ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go, exceed expectations even beyond their listed specifications. They boast ample RAM, and since Grinding Gear Games asserts that its game can run on an Intel Arc A380, it’s reasonable to assume that the AMD Z1 Extreme GPUs in these handhelds should perform seamlessly.
As a tech-savvy individual myself, I can confidently say that if you’re rocking an MSI Claw (which, by the way, sports Arc as its graphics), you should be good to go when it comes to handheld gaming. The GPUs listed as minimum requirements for playability in this context don’t seem to pose any significant concerns.
In Path of Exile 2, controller compatibility will also be available due to the game being designed for consoles as well. The difference between using a controller and mouse and keyboard is significant in a game like this, but since you don’t compete against other players (you can play cooperatively), there’s no real disadvantage either way.
That 100GB storage requirement is pretty hefty, though, so you might need to clear some space out. Personally, I wouldn’t recommend trying to run this from a microSD card.
Path of Exile 2 isn’t currently rated for Steam Deck, but it’s in the works
From my perspective as an onlooker, it’s clear that the hardware in the Steam Deck surpasses the baseline specifications needed for Path of Exile 2. However, the key concern revolves around the fact that the Steam Deck operates on Linux, and the game will need to run via the Proton compatibility layer.
As of now, the status of Path of Exile 2 on Steam Deck shows as “undetermined” on Steam, but don’t fret! Earlier this year, the developers have made it clear that they are indeed working on optimizing the game for the Steam Deck.
As of now, we’re unsure if it will be ready for the initial early access release scheduled for December 6. However, we do know that it will eventually occur, which is something to look forward to.
