Almost had a unique, collector’s edition popcorn bucket for Madame Web, adorned with significant references from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and subtle hints towards other Spider-Man characters. Known as one of the most cherished superheroes globally, Spider-Man, however, poses a challenge when it comes to producing movies or TV shows. The reason being that the film rights for this character were sold off by Marvel decades ago to prevent bankruptcy, causing complications later when Marvel aimed to establish the MCU. For nearly a decade, Spider-Man was inaccessible due to these rights issues, despite continuous production of new Spider-Man movies. However, following the failure of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Marvel and Sony negotiated a deal that allowed the character to join the MCU.
In simpler terms, Sony kept the rights for Spider-Man movies but allowed Marvel to use Spidey in joint films, like those within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). This partnership was beneficial and delighted fans. However, Sony also wanted to create their own Spider-Man spin-off series with characters such as Morbius, Venom, and Madame Web. Unfortunately, Madame Web turned out to be a flop, disliked by both audiences and critics. Additionally, it underperformed financially, which was not surprising given the character’s limited appeal without a compelling storyline. Essentially, it seemed like the film was developed without much thought given to the story, rather than selecting characters for a movie based on their potential within a captivating narrative.
As a seasoned movie critic, I’ve often pondered the peculiarities surrounding Sony’s portrayal of Spider-Man in their villain movies. The intricate web of connections between Madame Web and Spider-Man, compared to other villains, has been a subject of much speculation. Sony seems to dance around using Spider-Man explicitly, opting for subtle nods or references instead.
A teaser for Morbius, for instance, displayed a graffiti of Spider-Man, but this was conspicuously absent in the final cut. The Venom movies, too, exist in a distinct universe and briefly intersect with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, only to be pulled back into their own realm. It’s an unusual pattern that has left many of us scratching our heads.
However, whispers and concept art hinted at Tom Holland’s Spider-Man taking center stage in Madame Web, potentially appearing in the film itself. This intriguing possibility adds another layer to the ongoing saga of Sony’s Spider-Man universe.
A significant aspect of the storyline focuses on Peter Parker’s mother being pregnant and getting attacked by the film’s antagonist during labor. However, it seems the original plan was for the movie to be centered entirely around the villain attempting to halt Peter Parker’s birth. Interestingly, a leaked popcorn bucket shared on Reddit by user Chemistry11 hints that the movie would have incorporated direct ties to the MCU and other Spider-Man adversaries such as the Green Goblin and Doc Ock.

As a movie critic, I’ve recently encountered an intriguing incident involving the merchandise for Sony’s upcoming Marvel movies. Just a month before the release of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’, I received a set consisting of a bucket and a drink cup, featuring characters like Thanos, Thor, Hulk, Tony Stark, and Drax the Destroyer – subjects of articles penned by the Daily Bugle. However, these items were promptly ordered to be returned for destruction. Baffling, right?
Strangely enough, I was later sent a more straightforward bucket bearing the movie’s logo. This peculiar turn of events only serves to underscore Sony’s apparent lack of clarity in handling ‘Madame Web’ and its broader universe. The situation becomes even more perplexing with Michael Keaton’s post-credit scene filming for ‘Morbius’, where even he seemed puzzled about the direction of the storyline. It’s clear that Sony has some work to do to make sense of this tangled web!
It’s evident that Sony was aiming to link the character of Madame Web with the MCU, though the connection wasn’t explicitly stated in the movie. Instead, the film seems to nudge viewers to draw those connections on their own. Currently, it appears that plans for future Spider-Man spin-offs have been put on hold after the underwhelming performance of Kraven the Hunter.
