As a longtime fan of the Crash Bandicoot series, hearing about the potential cancellation of Crash Bandicoot 5 leaves me feeling like I’ve just stumbled upon a hidden temple filled with Wumpa Fruits, only to find out someone’s been eating them all!
Earlier this year, it was speculated in various reports that Activision may have secretly scrapped the development of Crash Bandicoot 5, a project initially undertaken by Toys for Bob. Now, additional information about the supposedly abandoned platformer seems to be surfacing.
In a recently published video, YouTube channel DidYouKnowGaming has claimed that following the release of Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time, a small team within developer Toys for Bob started working on ideas for the series’ next mainline single-player instalment.
As a passionate gamer, I’ve heard rumors that the development of this game was halted after only a few months due to Activision choosing to redirect their studio’s energy towards live service titles. It’s been suggested that underperforming sales of Crash 4 might have contributed to this decision, although official sales figures for the game remain undisclosed. However, unofficial reports from earlier this year indicate that it may have surpassed the 5 million unit mark.
The video suggests that an idea for Crash Bandicoot 5 might have featured Spyro the Dragon as a secondary playable character within the game. Toys for Bob, who developed the 2018 Spyro Reignited Trilogy, had apparently pitched this concept, which would have combined Spyro’s world with Crash’s. The collaboration between the two characters was intended to tackle a threat originating from another dimension.
In the initial planning phase before filming began, there were several other concepts under consideration as well. These included a school environment for young villains, bringing back adversaries from previous films, and additional ideas. Some of this concept art from the aborted project is featured in the video. You can find the complete presentation below.
This year, Toys for Bob parted ways with Activision and their new overarching company, Microsoft. Despite becoming an independent studio, it was made clear in May that Xbox will continue to act as the publisher for their upcoming game. Rumors suggest that this game could be “Spyro 4”, which supposedly began active development in January.
