Cancelled Halo Battle Royale “Could Have Been a Game-Changer for the Franchise,” Developer Says

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia and disappointment upon hearing about the cancellation of Certain Affinity’s battle royale Halo project. I’ve been following the Halo franchise since its inception, and the prospect of a large-scale battle royale mode set in the expansive Halo universe was truly exhilarating.

2022 saw Certain Affinity declared as the official support studio for Halo Infinite. Later on, they confirmed they were working on a substantial and innovative project within the franchise. Rumors circulated that they were developing a massive battle royale mode for Halo, but earlier this year, it was suggested that this project was scrapped due to major changes within 343 Industries’ internal structure.

Currently, there’s a hint that a team member involved with the project at Certain Affinity may have revealed its termination. They also shared a glimpse of what the project looked like as it was being developed.

According to GameSpot’s report, Mike Clopper – former game director at Certain Affinity until his departure in March 2022 – mentioned on his LinkedIn profile that he was working on a potential battle royale version of the Halo series, which he believed could significantly boost the franchise. However, after its cancellation, Clopper has removed any reference to a battle royale mode from his LinkedIn profile.

According to his profile, he oversaw a big team of designers developing a discarded Battle Royale style for ‘Halo’, which he felt would have significantly boosted the franchise. Despite its cancellation, we found the gameplay and design process incredibly enjoyable.

Despite a challenging few years for the Halo franchise, there’s still much excitement ahead for fans. 343 Industries has officially been renamed as Halo Studios, and they’ve declared that future Halo games will be developed using the Unreal Engine. This change should lead to a smoother and more efficient production process. Moreover, several unannounced Halo projects are confirmed to be in development.
