As a seasoned Pokémon fan who has been following this franchise since the days of Red and Blue, I must say that the revelation about the abandoned Pokémon Z game feels like discovering a long-lost Pokémon hiding in an Ultra Ball. The details about Zygarde’s central role and the unique forms designed for balancing Xerneas and Yveltal are nothing short of fascinating.
In many instances throughout the Pokemon series, fans anticipated a third version for each generation. Typically, Pokemon games would debut with two versions (such as Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire), followed by an enhanced version around a year later (like Pokemon Emerald). Occasionally, Game Freak would deviate from this pattern by releasing a full sequel (for example, Pokemon Black 2 and White 2) or two additional versions (such as Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon). However, Pokemon X and Y were among the rare exceptions that did not adhere to this pattern, with the speculated Pokemon Z never coming to fruition. Nevertheless, fresh information about the proposed game has surfaced online after recent leaks at Game Freak.
In Pokemon Z, there was an emphasis on Zygarde, a character prominently featured in “Pokemon XYZ: The Series.” As per information leaked by Centro Leaks, the box art for this version would have showcased Zygarde as the main attraction. Throughout the storyline, Zygarde was tasked with maintaining equilibrium between Xerneas and Yveltal, two legendary Pokemon from “X and Y.” If either of these powerful Pokemon grew too strong, Zygarde would transform into a form specifically designed to counteract them. For instance, if the deer-like Xerneas became dominant, Zygarde would change into a wolf-like form; conversely, if the flying Yveltal gained too much power, it would adopt a form equipped with weapons for air combat.
The designs in question were seemingly reused for Zygarde’s 10% and 100% forms, first appearing in Pokemon Sun and Moon, with the story of Pokemon Z taking place during that generation instead. The Zygarde Complete Forme Pokedex entry in Pokemon Moon hinted at its conflict, stating that it possesses power capable of overpowering even Xerneas or Yveltal. Initially, Pokemon Sun and Moon were intended to offer more content related to Zygarde, including a plotline that was ultimately removed from the generation. This could have provided additional context for Sina and Dexio’s roles after receiving the Zygarde Cube.

Although it’s intriguing to speculate about what could have been with Pokemon Z, it doesn’t seem like its cancellation was a significant setback. As usual with Game Freak and The Pokemon Company, much of the discarded content found new purpose, and the storyline involving Zygarde appears to have had positive outcomes, such as contributing to an engaging plot in the anime and even influencing Pokemon Go. Although the plans for Pokemon Z were ultimately abandoned, there’s a chance that more of Zygarde’s backstory could be explored in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, scheduled for release in 2025. Given that the game is expected to focus on the Kalos region and elements from Pokemon X and Y, it’s plausible to expect such developments!
